Hello

:: A Year Of Good Things : 14/366!

January 14, 2012

NB : Here is the link to the crochet pattern I am using!

Brr. It is totally cold in Melbs again today. Very unseasonal and completely conducive to cosying up a bit.  We had a BBQ lunch and I’ve been watching Friday Night Lights (catching up on the earlier seasons which I haven’t seen).  I’ve been reading snippets of The Essential New York Times Cookbook.  Gosh. I can’t tell you how much I love this book. It’s absolutely jam packed with great recipes, little stories, variations and footnotes on EVERY SINGLE RECIPE. There are hardly any images, so if you like pretty pictures this might hurt your brain. Personally I love its seriousness. I love that it is a Tome of the Times.  I am going to cook a couple of recipes from this book each week, to change up our repertoire a bit.

We’ve made margaritas tonight. I have decided that Tequila is the new vodka (for me!) and we mixed up a teensy batch using Thomi Miers recipe (minus the Agave Syrup)  Um. Yum.

Ari and I wandered into the city for a while this afternoon to pick up a couple of things.  On the way home we walked through the park and looked for Possum Bottoms.  If you peer up into the trees you can see the rear ends of sleeping possums, if you have a keen eye. It’s totally cute and was a pretty nice way to end the afternoon.

Tonight we are having Rohan’s orecchiette and I’m going to crochet a bit more and watch the teev.

Pretty Good Things, methinks!

Tell me one Good Thing that you did today!  Or even 2 or 3 or 4?!

xx Pip

Your day sounds wonderful. Opposite ends of the weather spectrum here in Adelaide today. I spent the day with my daughter and close friends swimming at Carrickalinga beach, an hours drive south of Adelaide, and it was just magical. I just posted a few pictures. Glorious. Have a great week!

Hi Pip, started of the day with a scrummy7 breakfast at the Paragon Cafe in Rathdowne St with daughter/twin number 2 (cos she was born second! ;-))and then headed over to Seddon to pick up daughter/twin 1 and two grandsons Packed the car with thermos, afternoon tea goodies, football, table tennis bats and ball (!), picnic rug, hats…well…you get the idea..and headed over to 'Newport Lakes'.
We spotted swans, ducks, seagulls, mosaic rocks, lookouts with dreamy views, huge stepping/jumping stones and inhaled that gorgeous scrubby, eucalyptusy, uniquely Aussie flavour that made us feel we could have been miles from anywhere!
A Very 'Good Thing Day' was had by All :-))

Hi Pip! I must say your crochet project is looking just WONDERFUL! Pilot Bean looks so cute and comfortable too! Hmmm… My good things have been:
    1. Going to our fav Italian restaurant (cheap and cheerful!) in Randwick, Zia Piña – you should try it when next in sydney! They make AWESOME pizzas!
    2. Taking the family to watch the planes come in at the airport! Always a buzz and even better when combined with coffee and Krispy Kremes!
    3. Indulging in some sewing and crochet, crochet and more crochet!
    4. Spending time with our extended family for Sunday Lunch today . There are always about 20-30 of us!!!!

    Have a fab day!

Cool! Thanks for your reply! x

Hey Clare! I am a heathen and use a LOT of acrylic! I just love the colours and handle of it! It's soft and bright, which is just how I like my crochet. I buy a lot of yarn at Lincraft (I buy their DK yarn) and also at Spotlight (Vera Moda mostly!)

If I use wool, I go to The Yarn Barn!

I think there is some yarn snobbery out there, but I don't care. I like acrylic! I love the bright colours!

If I want pastel colours, I like a bit of baby merino, too! Try http://shop.pickles.no/en/products/yarn/ for that!

Hello! This is my good things for the day, well the past few days actually.. I finally started a blog and added some things for my 366 good things http://hattiehen.blogspot.com/
Your blanket is looking lovely and bright. Crochet on a chilly day is very very good-thingish.

  • clare January 15, 2012 at 5:26 AM

Hi Pip! I love what you're crocheting. I've been wondering if you prefer/recommend wool over acrylic or if you just use any old yarn. Do you have a fav you could share?
As far as good things…I went to a market with my husband and daughter and listened to some music and had a drink (good for us all!) and I began tidying our spare room (good for everyone too!)
    Thanks for your lovely blog.

I survived the Western Australian heat today too, though Margaret River was not quite as hot as the City. I went to our local farmers market this morning and hung out with my puppy this afternoon and made yummy smoothies

  • Allana January 15, 2012 at 12:19 AM

Cold and windy in Tassie today too, but my husband, daughter and I found a lovely sunny spot in a local reserve and hung out playing with my friends 2 week old bundle of beautiful boy, went on a nature walk and spotted some black fish in the Blackfish River, drank lemonade and ate BBQ sausages and salads – perfection 🙂
Your day looks and sounded perfect too, I love that you can wander in to the city, but still be able to spot Possum bottoms – Australia is THE BEST 🙂

My good thing today was cooking myself dinner – yummy chicken with a mustardy sauce, rice and yummy green beans.

  • Clare January 14, 2012 at 10:22 PM

I went for a bike ride with my 9 year old boy by the lake and it was awesome. It rained a little bit but then the sun came out and warmed us up, and then we ate blueberries.

  • Beck January 14, 2012 at 9:23 PM

Ooo! Why has it taken me 14 whole days of unabashed iPad love to discover your project?! Today I left the house! Good for me, good for my 13 week old baby, good to have lunch with visiting pop in law and handsome hubby and good to have yumtastical lunch (finally!) at Residential Kitchen. Soo much goodness! Also, am at the same time inspired and intimidated by your amazing crochet. Can't wait to see what it looks like finished!

  • Reannon Hope January 14, 2012 at 8:25 PM

    My good things were
    1. Putting the A/C on after lunch. It's bloody hot in Perth & I've been trying to swim more & use A/c less but my boys were hot & felt like bumming indoors. Good thing for us all to be cool.
    2. Had a afternoon nap. I never do this but I was tired so I let myself sleep . Good for me but good for boys too as it means no cranky mum to deal with
    3. My 8 yr old asked for chilli con carne-AGAIN! he has eaten it the last 2 nights. I tried to suggest other things but he says " I love it & just feel like it. Please mum?" all with sad puppy dog eyes. So I pulled some out of the freezer because it makes me happy that he loves my cooking & I like that he likes to eat. Good thing for us both

My 14th good thing today was enduring the heat here in Perth to cheer the hubbie on in a Triathlon…..oooh the cool of Melbourne would have been nice. x
