Hello

A Week of Vintage Australiana – with Gemma Jones – Day 3

April 29, 2008

Marion…. was the best!

Marion Hall Best would’ve loved Meet Me at Mikes. She would’ve dined at the (new) Carlton Club. She would’ve loved Lara Cameron fabrics. She would’ve made a special room for for me if I was more famous and special than I am. And maybe she would’ve championed Rhys Lee. And shopped for furniture at Great Dane? And loved the idea of the new Ferris Wheel….

That’s if she was now rather than then. Interior designer deluxe! Marion Hall Best introduced Marimekko to Oz, taught us that pink and red were an awesome colour combo, made painting a wall an art and gave Australian domestic spaces a continental and international breath. Oh, and how about her double-up surfing in Hawaii? She deserves to be one of my heroes.

Browsing the net, as you do when there is uni work to be done, I stumbled across your blog.
As Marion's great grandaughter I can tell you that her sense and love of colour is certainly contagious or perhaps hereditary, I'm yet to decide.
I work in a yarn shop in Sydney (same company as the Shy Lion) and I am constantly trying to get people to be adventurous with colours. I can't help but love your crochet blankets!
