I’m starting off with one of my favourite illustrators, Art Seiden. He illustrated a whole host of amazing and strange Little Golden Books – (with some absolutely gorgeous illustrations in some of the Howdy Doody series) – go figure!
However, that’s a whole other hard-to-get-hold-of story, so let’s talk about the Art books you might have in your own collection, or might stumble upon fairly easily at your local op-shop.
‘The Train to Timbuctoo’ was authored by ‘Goodnight Moon’ writer Margaret Wise Brown (who also wrote The Color Kittens, Mr Dog and Sailor Dog for LGB) – and illustrated by lovely Art. First released in 1951 with 28 pages, the reissues have 24 pages.
‘Never Pat a Bear’ was written by Mabel Watts and published in 1971. It has the most beautiful bold illustrations – and heaps of gorgeous colour, text and detail. Highly recommended – i bet you remember this one!

I haven’t been able to find out a lot about Mr Seiden, apart from the fact that like Charley Harper, his illustrations seem to run the gamut, from children’s books to adult non-fiction. Ya gotta love that. I’m thinking that he drew and painted day in and day out – with pretty amazing results. Practice makes perfect.
Hands up who likes Art?!
