Local lad Martin Sharpe’s film ‘Still Life’ is a TropFest entry for the Audience Choice award. Go him! Martin’s been making films since he was eleven and just between you and me, he’s totally great at it.
I just watched Still Life for the first time and I’m giving it a mega-double thumbs up (but not a Terry Richardson thumbs up because I actually hate Terry R. Shudder.)
Anyway, Martin and his filmy gang Jeremy Weppner, Will Lovett and Pablo Tochez-Anderson all had a hand in Still Life’s conception and production with totally rad results. I’m a sucker for a love story and this one is not only artfully played out in around 5 minutes, it features baddies and fruit and a bit of snappy dancing too! Win!
I chatted to Martin on Facebook about the film (because that’s how I spend my evenings, chatting to filmmakers… cough.) Here’s what he told me about ‘Still Life’:
‘This is the second short film I’ve ever made, and the first animation. I wanted to capture that sense of wonder I always had as a kid going to the movies, and also make something narrative driven that didn’t involve all the violence and negativity that everything seems to need these days.
I hope STILL LIFE is just the beginning of my film making career. And I hope the next one is even more ambitious and inspiring than the last.’
I am totally amazed by people who make films, especially animated films. I can not even fathom the time that went into this. When I try, my eyeballs hurt. Yeowch. Not good.
If you love this film as much as I do, download the Tropfest ‘You Be The Judge’ App and vote for it in the Audience Choice category. We creative peeps have to stick together right? We need to recognise the good stuff and share it about, willy nilly. And also, we need to vote. Yep. No complacency allowed. We gotta move. Vote for people whose stuff we like. Yes!
Don’t be put off by having to download the TropFest app either, because it’s a cool little capsule of interestingness for film lovers. There’s lots of stuff to watch FOR FREE! (Just don’t forget to vote for Still Life if you loved it too!)
Hey, have you ever been to TropFest?
What did you think about all the discussion about the winning film ‘Bamboozled’? Have you seen it? Liked it? Not?
Write soon,
Your pal, Pip
PS: Super talented 15-year-old Victorian filmmaker Adrian Di Salle won the junior section of the competition, TropJnr. So cool! Victoria for the win!
