The boys went camping and motor bike riding over the cup day holiday… so Rin and I crafted our way through the race – turning the tv on at 3.15 to see the winner… I feel like a bit of a traitor, really – do you HAVE to watch the race to be a true Melbournian? I guess I’m still a tourist then, huh?!
I cut up lots of squares of these lovely prints.. and started sewing them all together.. should have a blankie done in a couple of weeks if things go according to plan. I’m worried about my squeaking sewing machine – it chucks a spooz whenever I try and sew lots of layers.. so fingers crossed I can keep the squeaks to a minimum.
The house was soooooo quiet without the boys and with the shop closed! It was a bit eerie, really.. but we managed with plenty of savoury shapes, bloody marys and cups of tea. Toast with brie, tortilla sandwiches.. it was all about girl food. Of course there were curried sausages and roast lamb in/on the stove for the ferals when they did return.. COVERED in dirt and barely walking they were all so tired.
This week at Mikes I’m planning to profile some of the crafty gals who are letting us sell their stuff. It’s probably time i stopped rabbiting on about me for a while, huh?!
Has anyone ever used that straight binding you can buy on eBay to bind a quilt? It’s so cute – in lots of prints – but I was just wondering if it’s OK or completely impossible?

I think you qualify as a Melbournite, even if you don’t watch the race……. having a shop helps, I’m sure!
How long has it been since you oiled your machine? Sometimes that’s all it needs when it starts to sound ratty – The old saying is that you should change needle and oil your machine after every three garments…….
I’ve used straight binding for quilts before – I just make it myself by cutting strips of fabric and ironing the pleats in….it works fine for me – I’ve never had any troubles. I always find bias stuff a bit slippy anyway…..

Oh, what fun, nothing like Dad taking the children out to bring them home limp & exhausted, love it!! Remember, your sewing machine (or 3 in my case) is your friend, they like a good service & Paula is right, it will purrrr upon return, best $100 (fingers crossed no more) you’ll ever spend. The quality of stitching will be so noticeable & all the niggles, aches & pains of abuse will slide away, until the next time. I’m in the dilema of to service at my local, tried & tested centre in Darwin before we move & hope they’re done in time, over locker included, or to wait until we arrive in Canberra?? I only plan hand stitching for the family in the last 3 weeks, but my machines are my security blankets, now i have the service anxiety . . . love Posie
hey pip, did a service on my old sewing machine on the weekend and it’s gone from klunky to purring. highly recommend a vaccum out of fluff and addition of oil (olive from beside the stove in my case).

and by the way… you should probably oil your sewing machine if it’s noisy. makes a world of difference. I know, I just did mine!
