Hello Listen/Watch/Read

:: Retro Readers Book Club :: Pippi Longstocking

October 8, 2011

The next book in Retro Readers Club is Pippi Longstocking!  It is one of my all time favourite books!  Would you like to read along?  Or re-read it?!  You can read it to yourself, or to a friend or to children.  You can listen to it, if you prefer, via audio book or cd.  And you have  a month to read it and report back!  Or not report back! It’s up to you!

What do you say?  Are you in with Lindgren?  Sign up in the comments!  (And there is a button in the right side of this column, if you would like to add it to your blog!  But you don’t have to! And you don’t have to have a blog to join in, either!)

xx Pip

  • michelle October 10, 2011 at 9:40 AM

Do you know what? It is a miracle I didn't suffocate as a child from sleeping with my head down the end of the bed and my feet on my pillow. I adored Pippi Longstocking and I would love to read her again. Please count me in!

Hi Pip, I am in the middle of reading Pippi to my little boy at bedtimes! I read it to my bigger boy a couple of years ago, it is a super book for boys as well as girls. Last month on holiday we were lucky enough to visit Junibacken in Stockholm, a museum devoted to Astrid Lindgren with a lifesize Villa Villekelula for kids to play in and a café serving Pippi's baked treats, it was awesome!! On our way back we were held up at Stockholm airport for 6 hours but luckily they had a Pippi play area at our departure gate with treehouses and all kinds of exciting things. Love! My favourite part of the book is when you find out what Pippi's full name is! Hee hee. x

sounds like a perfect idea for the school hols which start tomorrow

  • Yvette Adams October 8, 2011 at 9:03 PM

I read this with my daughter last year! I wanted to like it more – it was just a bit… hmmmm… weird I guess. I'm sure I would have liked it more if I read it as a child.

  • cateoh October 8, 2011 at 7:02 PM

Yes! I read this to my daughters about 4 years ago and we loved it so much that we named the baby I was pregnant with at the time Pip (like Martta's daughter, it's her second name, and we chose it for just the same reasons- so she would grow up to be a strong and funny girl, and she has!) Anyway, I think it's time we visited this book again.

  • Sian Lile October 8, 2011 at 6:37 PM

    pippi! pippi! (i'm in)

  • Martta October 8, 2011 at 5:18 PM

I'm in! I named my daughter Peppi (it's her second name) which is Pippi in Finnish. I wanted her to have a strong name so she would grow up to be a strong girl and a funny one too.

My Peppi is still a little wee newborn, but I was planning to read it to her anyway. Good timing I say.

  • Swirlyarts October 8, 2011 at 4:24 PM

Spooky – me and Anya have just started reading this after buying it at a school book fair earlier in the week. We will be starting chapter 4 tonight and we too have the Lauren Child illustrated version 🙂

  • Hattie Hen October 8, 2011 at 3:57 PM

Ha! What a coincidence. I was reading this book to my son last night. We have the version that is illustrated by Lauren Child. Was a great opportunity to read it myself since I didn't get around to it in my childhood (too busy with Trixie Belden books).

  • knitgirl66 October 8, 2011 at 3:49 PM

Yes please – count us in as 'Retro Readers'. I love this book and will look forward to sharing it with my family.
