Project Ginger Beer – How To Make Ginger Beer

October 11, 2008

Hmm…. I made the ‘plant’ for the ginger beer this morning. Snoopy helped. I made a double batch of the ‘plant’. You can never have too much ginger beer or too many tomatoes, I think. If my calculations serve me correctly, this should result in more then 20 bottles of ginger beer. In a couple of weeks I’ll be siphoning it into 1.25l plastic bottles -(in case of explosion DO NOT use glass!)

I figure 20 plus bottles should last us a month or so. Probably less if i keep giving it to people… which I think I might! And even less if we start mixing it with gin on balmy afternoons.

If you’d like to ginger beer with me – you can start today! Here’s what to do…

To reap 20 or so bottles of ginger beer – you need to make a starter or plant and ‘feed’ it for one week. So today – take a large clean jar. Add to it 2 tsp of ground ginger, 2 tsp of sugar, 1 tsp dried yeast and 2 cups of water. Mix it all up nicely. Cover with muslin (or other clean open weave fabric) and secure with a rubber band (or a piece of knotted elastic). Each day you need to ‘feed’ your ginger beer plant 2 teaspoons of sugar and 2 teaspoons of ground ginger. Do that for a week and keep checking in here – I’ll tell you what to do next on Saturday, after it’s sweetened and fermented for a week. (Please don’t put a lid on your jar – the bubbling yeast might ‘blow’ it right off).

ALSO: Start collecting soft drink or water bottles – you’ll need them. At least 20 1.25 litre bottles if you’re following me.

Happy gingering!

xx Mikes
