:: Parents + Grandparents + You = Things

 “People tend to like what their grandparents liked and reject the taste of their parents.”

I just read this today over on NPR. There was a piece about mid-century furniture and how it’s having another surge of popularity in the US. I think it’s popular here, still too… but maybe 70s and 80s pieces are getting more of a look-in now.

Anyhoo. I was thinking about this statement:

 “People tend to like what their grandparents liked and reject the taste of their parents”

I wonder if that’s true for you?

For me, it’s really not. I am insanely into anything that has some connection to my childhood. There’s a comfort for me in being connected to the past. I am sure that’s quite neurotic, but I’m really fine with that. I love things we might have had in my childhood home, my grandparent’s homes or our holiday shack. They run an invisible thread to a time in my life I want to remember. And they are a tangible way of remembering and explaining my childhood to my own kids and other people in my life. Win!

All kinds of things fall into this category for me: baskets of crochet, vintage prints, souvenir tea towels, those cute tv dinner trays with the clip on legs, hot water bottles, macrame things, vintage crockery (esp Willow pattern!), old metal teapots, anodised cups, enamel ware, couches with rolled arms, 70s coffee tables I could go on and on!
