:: Paper Giants, Coachella, Lego…

April 17, 2011
Paper Giants began airing last night on ABC1. It’s a two part series which follows Asher Keddie (as Ita Buttrose) creating Australia’s first magazine for the modern woman, Cleo. The second part airs tonight. Or you can watch it on iView if you live in Australia. There is a trailer on YouTube, too.
I am totally predicting a huge swing back to seventies fashion now. The wardrobe department have done an outstanding job, choosing stylish but authentic ensembles for Ita and her editorial team. You can read a little bit about that here.
Asher Keddie is fantastic as Ita. I am busting for the final installment. I think I will twiddle my thumbs until then. Or I could watch Coachella live. Because The Strokes, PJ Harvey and The National are coming up LIVE today…. (Did I say LIVE enough times?! It’s LIVE, people!!?) Did you catch Arcade Fire yesterday? They were amazing. I think they are the love children of New Order and Broken Social Scene!
On the Craft front I have finished my book edits for ‘Make! Hey!’ and now have diagrams due. And then that is IT! Phew! Also on the Craft front I am knitting a scarf, crocheting a blanket and embroidering a map. Busy times!
Ari and I have been having nice school holiday times, too. We made 2 huge floral sausage dogs, a hand-drawn softie, a doggy bed for Lucky, and we decorated our sneakers with fabric markers. We have also been eating lots of curry and doing Lego and watching things on the computer!
Are you well? Did you watch Paper Giants? Or Coachella? Are you making things? Or on holidays? Are you having busy times?
xx Pip

Hello Pip! I think your prediction will come true… I was totally lusting after the Ita wardrobe while watching Paper Giants last night. I'm looking forward to the second instalment tonight.

There has been a ton of drawing going on here during the school holidays, plus some bead threading (my two made each other necklaces), visiting op shops in search of buttons for button collections, scarf knitting, a teeny bit of cross stitch, and we made a Lego medieval village which is now being visited by a hula girl and a snowboarder. This week we are looking forward to more of the same with some added Easter picnics and birthday party planning!

Oh I loved Paper Giants too! Everything – the soundtrack, the fashion, the haircuts, the interiors and the acting – awesome job!

  • meetmeatmikes April 23, 2011 at 9:44 PM

SAME! It was so great to watch, wasn't it?! x

  • Jennie April 23, 2011 at 9:44 PM

I loved it – the fabrics the most!
Wish it was a series – its just a 2 parter?

Paper Giants is all kinds of awesomness! Loved it! And it was really all I could manage to do last night since I have 4 girls on holidays (well 2, 2 are too small) and my husband is away. Argh, so tired… all crafting has been done in a daze and has turned out disasterously. I'm inspired to do some clothes sewing after watching 'Ita' last night, and keep thinking of that song from years ago, but can't quite remember it clearly.

    Dreaming of fashion….

I wish we could see Paper Giants here in the States–it looks fantastic!

Thank you for the Coachella link; I didn't realize it was online and can't wait to go through the archives and catch up on what's happening.

This week is spring holiday for American schoolchildren, but as a working woman I don't get a break beyond leaving work early tomorrow for a Passover seder with my family…SIGH!

Thoroughly enjoyed Paper Giants last night. The fasion, Asher and the guy who plays Kerry Packer are amazing. Can't wait for the rest tonight. i've written it on my hand so I don't forget ๐Ÿ™‚

My Mum always says I was born 20 years too late, as I have always loved 70s fashion. Last night I was drooling over Ita's ensembles, even though synthetic fabrics were all the rage (stinky armpits anyone?). I thought that Asher Keddie nailed Ita's voice so well, can't wait for tonight's finale.
We have been mowing the lawn, making pizza, printing family photos(I am up to mid 2008 – eek!), and enjoying the Autumn sunshine. I am anticipating a carb fest later in the week, hot cross buns and choc galore! xxx

Oh gosh, I'm love, love LOVING Paper Giants! I'm an old Gen-Xer, born in the late-60s, so I have clear memories of the 70s. It was just SO great to see all that familiar fashion & design. I was almost expecting a young Jack Thompson himself to saunter down the stairs – a bit disappointing that he didn't!

Ita was amazing – & Asher Keddie is really doing her justice. What a great time that was, so much more progressive than now. Things are depressingly conservative nowadays, & sometimes it feels like feminism never happened, so it's so great to travel back to the early-70s for a little while, when times were a-changin'.

I will have to catch it on iView. Looks amazing. Tis a shame I have spent most the hols so far on public transport going in and out of the hospital. At least I get to knit on the train though : )

Paper Giants was fantastic!! Asher Keddie really is one of my fave aus actresses.
I am trying to make today go as fast as possible, so that I can settle in again tonight.
I too think it would make a great series… such a shame they didn't go that route.

Congrats on making progress on the book. I have been venturing into building my own dollhouse and dollhouse furniture. It really is quite relaxing. I like the idea that I can design and make my own furniture for a fraction of the cost of the real thing ๐Ÿ˜‰ It has been fun checking out design blogs and such to get ideas. I even made a desk and bed.
    Have a great holiday!

oh, i LOOOOOOOVED it pip! the clothes and the lisp were perfect. i wish it was an ongoing series, methinks there'd be plenty of fodder for stories from those packers and the lovely ita.

  • Banana Meet-Cute April 21, 2011 at 8:18 AM

I really enjoyed Paper Giants too, and am looking forward to the second part tonight – it looks like it's going to get quite racy!

I was watching this last night! I thought it was really good, definitely interesting for me to see what the 70's were like, not having been born then.

  • Rachel April 21, 2011 at 8:18 AM

Oh my Arcade Fire are amazing!!! I would've loved to have been at Coachella, but on the flip side, I got tickets yesterday to see Arcade Fire at Edinburgh Castle in September – all I can say is SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE (whilst jumping up and down like a crazy). Love your blog Pip ๐Ÿ™‚
