Hello

Move It Like Mike – Week 1

June 3, 2009

Okay. After doing a really good job at being active last year, I have proceeded to sit on my bum surrounded by pretty sedentary work so far this year. No surprises, huh? I really did try to get moving this year, but I actually found that I couldn’t quite be fagged. As a result of this I feel more lethargic then a vat of oil full of giant sea turtles. I do. So now is the time. I am going to start walking again. It’s only 20 minutes out of my life, right, and it’ll make me feel a huge way lot better, right? Okay. So you agree. That’s good. You can be my audience. Because then I’ll totally feel like I’m letting you down if I don’t exercise. It’s totally Win :: Win!

I’m going to tackle this week by week – and on a Thursday I’ll update you on how it’s all going. And you can join in if you want to – every week or just sporadically or perhaps vicariously while you munch chocolate biscuits and read about me instead. Sounds easy, huh? Gulp.

The rules ::

You need to walk a minimum of three times a week for 20 minutes to join. BUT if you would rather run or go to the gym or do other exercise that is just great too. You’re still in.

Maybe all you can manage is 20 minutes dancing to old ‘Rage’ videos in front of the telly. That’s good too. Maybe you still have those Denise Austin work out tapes? That could be great too. How about 20 minutes of serious running around with your kids? Shaking it to YoGabbaGabba?

You can let us know your take on ‘Move It Like Mike’ on the weeks that you join in, over on your own blog – just put your link in below. If you don’t have a blog just comment below so we know you’re on the team and what you’ve been doing. Because we want to know that you are suffering and sweating just like us. Yes we do. Move it like Mike, why dontcha?

I hope I'm not too late to join. I love walking and this is just perfect.

  • Henrysmomsmusings June 13, 2009 at 3:34 PM

I meant to join earlier when I first read about it – and completely forgot.
I actually already exercise fairly regularly – bicycling several mornings a week for 40 minutes or so and walking to dog every day. But it's not enough anymore, so I'm hoping that joining this will make me add something else to my routine. I like the idea of a whole group of (I assume mostly) women all doing this together.

  • SewHum June 12, 2009 at 11:49 AM

Great idea Pip. I did join the gym a while back – but it's so full all the time of fitness freeks! If you want to walk with anyone…let me know…it's my day job! Heart Foundation Walking! It would be great to get a group of bloggers walking & talking! what do you think?

  • The Gypsy June 9, 2009 at 8:21 AM

Glad I've found your blog, love the joyful spirit.
I've been movin' 3x a week (mostly) so I thought I'd share here. I either walk, row or stair climb at the gym, or dance, dance, dance!

  • littlelovelies June 8, 2009 at 8:31 AM

ok… now i really have no excuse! i started eating more healthy recently – cutting back on sugary extras and eating my 5 a day – but exercise…hmmmmm… so thanks pip for this kick up the backside!
p.s. and i'm glad i wasn't the only bad one out there!

i have practically no excuse now. I'm in! πŸ™‚

  • Anthea June 5, 2009 at 1:25 PM

Great minds think alike Pip! My friend Pam and I started walking 2 weeks ago. This morning we were up and powering along Elwood foreshore at 6.30am for an hour. Second time this week and twice last week. Now that I know everyone is in, I will go even when Pam is busy. Giddy Up everyone! x

  • Ulla June 5, 2009 at 4:43 AM

I walked with you last year until I hurt my knee, and now I'm ready to start again, carefully. I walked yesterday two times 20 minutes in heavy rain.

  • Polka Dot Rabbit June 5, 2009 at 1:53 AM

very cool, off to water aerobics tonight πŸ™‚

  • Ange June 4, 2009 at 11:21 PM

I'm in. Been walking in the mornings after dropping S at preschool, but need some mojo from outside myself, now that it's getting cooooold …

  • Niki June 4, 2009 at 10:15 PM

Brilliant! This is just the motivation I've been needing….only problem is I won't start for a week cause I'm off on holidays tomorrow.

But I'll meet your on the jogging track in about 10 days! πŸ™‚

Oh that's awesome guys! I did my first walk this morning. I am totally OUT OF SHAPE! Coughing, spluttering, grumping along was I – but I will keep trying and it will get easier and I'll make you proud!

Thanks for joining in – it really DOES spur you on and get you out of bed, knowing that other people are along for the ride!

  • Beth June 4, 2009 at 6:44 PM

I'm in too! It's hot here in Austin, TX but morning walks will be a great way to start the day! Look for updates on my blog on Wednesdays!

  • Hannah June 4, 2009 at 1:25 PM

OK! I did it!!! I need this!!! i really do, i signed up to do a 10K in London in Septemer- a 10K!!!! Am I crazy?

  • cath June 4, 2009 at 12:16 PM

I like to move it move it, I like to…move it. As committment-phobic as I am when it comes to arse-moving, I would love to join in. My blog is on the blink, there's dishes in my sink, I'll walk for 20 minutes, then I'll have a drink. Inspiring craftiness, and life be in it-ness. Nice one.

  • peanutville June 4, 2009 at 10:09 AM

good one. i may have to let go some of my internet luvs to fit it in…but maybe I'll be able to justify that extra glass of wine at the end of the week!

  • misskit June 4, 2009 at 9:59 AM

Awesome! I dropped by for crafty loveliness and am now embroiled in a walkin' club.

  • Liesl (Hoppo Bumpo) June 4, 2009 at 9:24 AM

I'll be doing pretty well to move it like Mike, but I'll give it a go!

  • Sophalina June 4, 2009 at 8:18 AM

    I'm in!

  • Michelle June 4, 2009 at 7:22 AM

    You can count on me!!

  • pepper June 4, 2009 at 5:47 AM

indeed! now it's getting colder the casseroles and baked good and hot chocolates and quilts call to me. must.move.away. also comfort in solidarity πŸ™‚

  • Retro Age Vintage Fabrics June 4, 2009 at 5:19 AM

Bugger – what a fab idea I couldn't walk away from. Bugger. Promise to do, not just try πŸ™‚

  • Dawn Tan June 4, 2009 at 5:00 AM

Ah. I just did some good staircase training ( Climbing 30 flights of stairs ) and a short jog! Almost died. Hahaha

  • woolanthropy June 4, 2009 at 4:49 AM

Woohoo. I have been going to spin class twice a week and just got a hula hoop to start spinning in a whole new way. Thanks for hosting this move along.

  • Hashi June 4, 2009 at 4:19 AM

Sister, I will be (virtually) joining you. I HAVE to get out my seat at lunchtime. This is my impetus. Thanks!

  • Shannon June 4, 2009 at 3:40 AM

Yay! I was just thinking the other day how much I loved your posts last year about everything your saw on your morning walks!
I'm feeling that winter blimpy thing already settling in (which has alot to do with my partner's wonderful cooking and perhaps a tad too much red vino). I managed a few lunch time walks two weeks ago but since then…nought.
This is just the inspiration I need to get my butt moving again – I'll be moving it like Mike!
No blog – but I'll comment along (now that I've come out of my lurker shell and started commenting!)
    Thanks Pip!

  • Gigi June 4, 2009 at 2:45 AM

Im in in in! And I'm gonna ride my lovely bike too. Yay!

  • the projectivist June 4, 2009 at 2:42 AM

    mmmmmmmm…. muffins

  • potty mouth mama June 4, 2009 at 2:27 AM

Hello, it's me AKA Fatty. I'll walk with you. I've been thinking all the time about the Mikes International School of Walking and I agree. Time to go back, because these muffin tops aren't gonna do it by themselves. Herumph.

  • Alexis June 4, 2009 at 1:56 AM

I'm in! We can do it! Rah, rah, rah!

  • Emma June 4, 2009 at 1:46 AM

Just ran another 6kms, felt a bit sluggish though. Hey I discovered my stash of pre-Leo jeans, I've been trying to fit back into them for years, put them on yesterday -THEY FIT! Yeehar!

  • Jhoanna June 4, 2009 at 1:42 AM

Go Pip! What a great idea and an added incentive to move it, move it.

  • nettie June 4, 2009 at 1:33 AM

Yes, I'm in. Can't be too hard, can it? OK, I'll go out at lunch time for walk around the city, instead of reading my favourite blogs (I can do that tonight!). Thanks for the inspiration, Pip.

  • Primrose June 4, 2009 at 1:25 AM

Good idea, Pip. I don't have a Blog but I'll comment here. 20 minutes sounds doable. I walk everywhere as it is but I'll aim to do more yoga stretches and some pilates if I can get a DVD. I'm not motivated enough to join the gym!

  • Sarah F June 4, 2009 at 1:25 AM

Yay Pip, I will stop googling the timetable at the gym and actually get off my bum and go!!!!! There is only so much planning a girl can do before she actually has to face the facts and realise that nothing is happening to the fitness level while you plan.
I think walking three times a week for 20 minutes is achievable. I'm in.

  • Mands June 4, 2009 at 1:15 AM

Count me in! What a fantastic idea! This will work twofold for me, encouraging me to exercise AND encourage me to update my blog more frequently!

  • BeckyEtal June 4, 2009 at 1:04 AM

I have been talking about excercise for so long I have forgotten how to do it πŸ™‚

I will be hitting the pavement with pram and pooch and I think we might all be a little better off for it!

  • lellephantine June 4, 2009 at 12:51 AM

Good idea – I'm in! Nothing is more motivating that exercising in a group – even if it's just via the Internet…

I went to my first bootcamp on Monday, and am still alarmingly sore 3 days later. This has got to change!!!

  • midge June 4, 2009 at 12:40 AM

    brilliant Pip,
there is nothing more motivating than feeling guilty about admitting that you bailed on sticking to the routine

  • CraftyA June 4, 2009 at 12:18 AM

Great idea. I try to move it every day for an hour – with the bung knee, I'm not as active as I was but am doing gym work to keep up my fitness and build up my leg. Now for resisting the lollies and cakes…

  • ginevra June 4, 2009 at 12:16 AM

Yep, me too! I did a bunch of weeks of exercise … and then … didn't.

I obviously didn't keep at it long enough to make a habit: hoping for more luck this time πŸ˜‰

  • Kirsty June 4, 2009 at 12:14 AM

    Move it like Mike…pure gold!

  • Christel June 4, 2009 at 12:09 AM

Walking is the best activity !, it provides exercise, gives you time to observe, and easy to do with friends.

  • Dawn Tan June 4, 2009 at 12:04 AM

Ah! Good one Pip! I've started to get my bum off and exercise as well. I started this week with a slow 20 mins jog on Monday. Probably more tonight! Ah. how I hate jogging! But knowing you girls are out there keeping fit, makes me feel better and extra motivated! : )

  • polly pratt June 3, 2009 at 11:55 PM

Wow such a great idea, i`ve just started biking again so will have to keep it up, i`ve got a sore throat this week so will start Monday. I have a circut i`ve been cycling for the past week or two . Down the Upfield track from Coburg to Brunswick across Sydney Rd into Lygon up into Nicholson and then into Bell st , heading towards home. It takes just over an hour at the moment and i want to get it down to 45 mins so this it a good way to get to my target, ( oh yeah and back into the old jeans) LOL

  • Jackie June 3, 2009 at 11:42 PM

    OK, I'm in!

I've done really well in the healthy eating side of the equation recently, but I suck at excercise!

AND I just got back from a round trip to Parkville (~80 mins), so a good day to start.
