Hello

:: Let’s Talk About : Movies

February 20, 2012
I like it that there is a scribble on this scan!

If you read my blog yesterday, you will know that I bought a couple of CDs. One of them we are super dooper loving (the other we just love!)  It’s Late Night Tales At The Movies. Cam and Ari and I are cheering every time a new track comes on.  We are dorks like that.

It features the themes from all kinds of movies. There is something for everyone and the production is rad. It sounds GORGEOUS.

Today I woke Mr Ari up, made a cup of tea, put this CD on and started checking blogs.  The King And I Soundtrack came on. I love The King And I. I have not watched it to check for political correctness, lately, in case you want to have a crack at that. It’s probably off the scale, but as a child, I knew not.  I just thought it was lovely.

I guess what I am talking about is  ‘Fave All-time Enduring Films’.  The King And I is one of these.  It’s something I watched a very long time ago and loved, and I still feel happy every time I catch a glimpse (or a bar) of it/from it.

Do you have a Fave All-Time Enduring Film that  you’ve watched for years?  Something you know off by heart, almost?  The King And I is one of mine, but I would also add a few more to my list.  Labyrinth. The Breakfast Club. Steel Magnolias. ET. I am sure there are more, but I don’t want to hog the titles.

What are your Fave All-Time Enduring Films? The ones you turn to for comfort and happy (or tears!)

xx Pip

Do you know? I think the scribble on the E.T. scan just might be Drew Barrymore's initials!

Pippi Longstocking! I was OBSESSED with this movie as a kid and I still love it to pieces.
As a gen y-er I'm also going to have to say the Harry Potter movies. I've seen them hundreds of times and I still put them on if I need some comfort. My best friend and I can quote the first one word-for-word, we've seen it that many times.

I have to say "Gone with the wind"… seriously enjoy every epic moment of that film. Just Beautiful!

  • Samantha February 21, 2012 at 12:15 PM

    Ferris Bueller!!!

  • Up Your Alley February 21, 2012 at 11:45 AM

I love the Sound of Music so dearly I diverted Salsburg whilst in Europe especially to stay in a hostel that projected it every night, and to tour all the film locations! I have clicked my heels where Maria sang 'confidence in me' and danced in the botanic gardens singing 'do a deer'! I burnt this one out on VHS as a little girl sneaking very strong milos on Saturday mornings. My favourite part is how Maria makes clothes out of curtains. I went off and did a fashion degree thanks to that film! Love the sets and costumes and outrageous political incorrectness of the King & I – but i'd take captain von trapp over yul brynner any day ๐Ÿ˜‰ X

Edward Scissorhands is the one I go to if I need to cry. Calamity Jane is the one I go for a nice cheer up.

  • Baa-Me Kniits February 20, 2012 at 9:40 PM

The King and I is one of my all time fabourites as well. That and Dr Zhivago, the music gets me everytime for both movies ๐Ÿ™‚

  • dropstitch February 20, 2012 at 7:35 PM

Weird Science! I used to know the whole script off by heart. I also loved The Secret Of My Success by proxy as my sister watched it pretty much every weekend (when she wasn't watching Annie).

  • Anne Hankinson February 20, 2012 at 5:22 PM

All time favourite movie is Better Off Dead – 80's at its best and I love John Cusack. Another 80s fave when I want to geek out is Adventures in Babysitting.

  • marjee February 20, 2012 at 4:30 PM

Ferris Bueler's Day Off is an all-time fave… Teen of the 80s I was!!

Oh, Sound of Music for sure
    and Fried Green Tomatoes
love, love, love Raging Bull too

  • Nikki February 20, 2012 at 2:47 PM

I had to laugh when you mentioned "The Kind and I"… I love that movie so much, and as a child my mother took me to see Yul Brenner in London twice. Therefore a pretty awkward stage where I had a crush on him! Yes, 12 year old girl with HUGE crush on Yul Brenner!!!!
Also love Sound of Music, Roman Holiday, and more recently Stranger Than Fiction (totally worth it if you haven't seen it!!!). Wil Farrel as a serious guy, and Emma Thompson, whom I would watch read the phone book!

  • Denise February 20, 2012 at 2:42 PM

Mary Poppins is my all time favourite .. I adored the penquin waiter scene and the Step in Time sequence

  • lisey February 20, 2012 at 1:49 PM

  • Amanda February 20, 2012 at 12:55 PM

Not sure if I could come up with five but I have a fav modern and fav older movie. My all time fav modern is Forrest Gump, almost know it by heart. Older = The Great Escape.

  • Mischka February 20, 2012 at 12:47 PM

Mine is a real mixed bag. Sound of Music is my all-time fave. Then you have (in no order) Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Delicatessan (1991 French) and the original Sabrina with Audrey Hepburn. Actually, anything with Audrey!

  • Naomi Bulger February 20, 2012 at 10:49 AM

Labyrinth, oh yes! And Goonies. The Secret of Roan Inish. And a really bad (yet happy-making) film with George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer in which they are both single parents… but I can't remember what it's called. And so many more!

  • Sarah February 20, 2012 at 10:49 AM

Good to know that there's other Sound of Music fans out there! yes, my all time fave movie – I especially love the Baroness (she got most of the good lines!). Guaranteed to put warm fuzzies inside. Other faves are Love Actually and Sweet Home Alabama.

  • Roxanne February 20, 2012 at 10:15 AM

I was a tragic 90's teen so my list is full of movies like Robin Hood : Prince of Thieves, Encino Man, Clueless, The Last of the Mohicans, Point Break and Bill & Ted. Haven't watched any of them for many a year though. May have to search the bargain bins at the DVD shop and have a movie marathon!

  • Sharonnz February 20, 2012 at 10:13 AM

If we're talking movies with soundtracks then def The Big Chill. I remember thinking how OLD the people were in it and caught a glimpse of it the other and thought "oh MAN, they all look so young now"! My kids are suckers for old musicals – The Sound of Music tops the list, 7 Brides for 7 Brothers, My Fair Lady, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Rock on!

  • Lovecrafting February 20, 2012 at 9:32 AM

I have to say I love the Bird Cage, Laura, How to Make an American Quilt, lots of old movies – Yep thats right just about love everything

  • Jackie February 20, 2012 at 9:11 AM

Mary Poppins is my favourite movie EVER. My sister and I used to get up every Saturday morning and put the VHS tape on and watch it while eating Nutri Grain straight out of the box LOL.

My family also love all the old musicals so I spent a LOT of time as a kid watching them. Calamity Jane, Guys and Dolls, Singing in the Rain, Sound of Music etc etc. All this comes in very handy at trivia nights, by the way.

  • Tids February 20, 2012 at 9:08 AM

Sound of Music for me ๐Ÿ™‚ Or anything with Shirley Temple in it!

  • Felicity February 20, 2012 at 8:59 AM

Snap to 'The King & I" Pip.
After seeing 'The Iron Lady' last year and watching the two Thatchers swirl around to this movie, I had to get it out and delight in it all over again.

    Happy day!

  • Renee February 20, 2012 at 8:27 AM

Ghostbusters is my all time favourite! I never feel like I'm wasting my time watching it over and over, because I love it so much. Also, Bill Murray is amazing!

  • Yvette Adams February 20, 2012 at 7:41 AM

I love The King and I. I watched it again a few years ago and don't remember thinking it was politically incorrect… not that I had that in mind when I was watching tho. Don't you just love Yul Brynner. He made bald sexy.

I love Edward Scissorhands too. One of my all time faves and now my daughter loves it too. My favourite movie of all time is The Princess Bride. I could recite the whole movie. Starting with the computer game sounds at the beginning "Bing, bing bing bing bing". LOL

  • Jess the Reader February 20, 2012 at 7:38 AM

Oh, I love The King and I too! But my all-time favourite movie is Guys and Dolls, starring Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando. I know all the lines off by heart, and sing the songs all the time. My favourite is Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat.

My other favourite is The Blues Brothers. My dad and I love this movie, and I have fond memories of being allowed to stay up late and watch it with him as a teenager.

  • Criossa February 20, 2012 at 7:21 AM

For me it was Sevs and ten Brides for Seven Brothers! I wore out 3 video's of it as a teen ๐Ÿ™‚

  • renae February 20, 2012 at 7:17 AM
