:: Let’s Make A List :: Must Watch Movies

August 2, 2011

Do you want to make a list?!  I really do!  Can we make a list together?  Yes we can!  I would LOVE to know your very favourite movies of all time, and a little bit about why.  You can name one, or a few, but they must be the movies you love the very most.  Desert Island Flicks, if you will!

Also, you can come back and add more as you think of them. Sometimes a question like this puts you on the spot, and you only remember the things you wanted to say later on.  So feel free to comment more than once.  PLUS these don’t have to totally represent WHO YOU ARE. They can just be the movies you would like to choose now.  I understand that things change and what you love today may be added to or adjusted in some way tomorrow.

You get started and I will check back with MY faves tomorrow!

xx Pip

PS :: LOOK at these amazing embroidered titles via Bugs and Fishes!

Listening to :: Desert Island Discs avec Morrissey

Looking at :: Fryd and Design Simpley Nice and lovely photos on Vardag

If you were to watch movies with me, I'd offer a choice of Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Third Man, Ghost World, The Shining, or the original Cape Fear.

the Royal Tennenbaums because it is awesome (and Wes Anderson is my favourite)

  • michelle August 8, 2011 at 11:44 AM

    Oh my!!

First pick would have to be The Princess Bride. We rented it again on dvd this weekend and we watched it twice. I love this movie, the six fingered man, Andre the Giant, The Pit of Despair, the lines!!! (I am Diego Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die). It rocks.

Desperately Seeking Susan. How hot is Aidan Quinn in this movie?!? I totally wanted to be Madonna/Susan/Rosanna Arquette so bad. When I watch this movie now, it still transports me back to watching this as a teenager and wishing I could be like them when I grew up.

Sixteen Candles. I used to love this movie because of Molly Ringwald, but now I love this movie because of Anthony Michael Hall. He is so cute in this movie, I just wanna adopt him. The kids are so geeky in this I just love them.

And a modern one, The Departed. This is such an awesome movie, no matter how many times I watch it. Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, Leonardo DiCaprio. Such a good story and so well acted.

Love Carolyn's comment that she still uses comments from:
    YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN
I relate to that – my whole family use phrases (probably the same ones) because it's just so bloody funny!
    i.e. Igor: Dr. Frankenstein…
    Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: "Fronkensteen."
    Igor: You're putting me on.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: No, it's pronounced "Fronkensteen."
Igor: Do you also say "Froaderick"?
    Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: No… "Frederick."
Igor: Well, why isn't it "Froaderick Fronkensteen"?
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: It isn't; it's "Frederick Fronkensteen."
    Igor: I see.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: You must be Igor.
    [He pronounces it ee-gor]
    Igor: No, it's pronounced "eye-gor."
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: But they told me it was "ee-gor."
Igor: Well, they were wrong then, weren't they?

    (still cracks me up)

  • MeAndBoo August 7, 2011 at 11:49 AM

ooo, ooo! Let me think, soooo many!!
But I have to say, Jaws, because it made me scared of water for ever and ever, at the age of 6.
And the original Star Wars trilogy. I had posters, bed sheets, the record, AND…Darth Vader's autograph. I met him at Myer.

  • Little Bird, Big Chip August 7, 2011 at 9:05 AM

    Ahem,
    Big Trouble in Little China!
I can't remember how many ties I watched this as a kid, am pretty sure I can still recite Kurt Russels monolougue…
    The Royal Tennenbaums.
    Little Miss Sunshine.
    Rushmore.
    My neighbour Totoro

  • Anonymous August 5, 2011 at 2:55 PM

Laura, am so happy you said 'Stand By Me', i just love that movie and can't wait until my son is old enough to enjoy it too 🙂

My other faves are Gone with the Wind (could watch it over and over) and Dumb and Dumber, it makes me laugh til my tummy hurts.

For a good old cry Life is Beautiful

  • Keely aka The Richest Girl in Bondi August 4, 2011 at 2:18 PM

The Breakfast Club is definitely a great start – I even love the theme song .. 'don't you .. forget about me'.

Other faves are Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Blazing Saddles (ok so I love Gene Wilder) Mean Girls and Big Fish. Signs is also awesome!

Ok I'll stop because I could go on forever.

  • daisy August 4, 2011 at 8:25 AM

    just two more,,,
    Tootsie! (dustin hoffman rules).
9 To 5! (this is seriously a classic film).

  • famfa August 4, 2011 at 7:08 AM

Ferris Bueller – because it makes me laugh, I know all the lines, I sing the songs, it's brilliant.

love actually – it's lovely and I can watch it every Christmas

Gregory's girl – because " did you know that when you sneeze it comes out of your nose 100 miles an hour. Atchoo just like that!"

  • Laura August 3, 2011 at 9:08 PM

It's been so fun to read everyone's faves.

I can't go past Stand By Me, it was a childhood favourite and it has stood the test of time superbly.

I adore Ponyo, maybe in part because when I saw it my little daughter had a big thing for ham so we called her Ponyo!

I like many others just melt watching Amelie, it is truly beautiful and I can still get so drawn into her world of whimsy.

I love John Cusack, mpre of a fan when his siter is tagging along in the movie with him! I really love Serendipity and Say Anything.

Gee now I am remembering loads of 80's classics that are awesome! Anything from the Molly Ringwald back catalogue – when everyone wanted to be a redhead like Molly and finally The Goonies – I really think Martha Plimpton was a star. Cheers

  • Jill August 3, 2011 at 7:55 PM

So, my list would have, in no particular order:
    1. Singin' in the rain (makes me happy if I am down).
    2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (I liked this movie, then when I broke up with my first serious boyfriend I watched it repeatedly and it helped me see that even though something hurts it is still good, 'coz you learn from it).
    3. Donnie Darko, the first version, NOT the re-released directors cut. What's with all of the waves?
    4. Children of Men, best dystopian movie ever, so real and so scary. I still have nightmares about the scene where the woman gets taken off the bus…shiver…

Also, I noticed a lot of people listed Howl's Moving Castle – I LOVED that film, but then I read the book by Diana Wynn Jones. It is sooooooo much better than the book that I cannot list Howl as a favourite movie anymore. She is a great author and I highly recommend her books to y'all. But all of Miyazaki's animations are top notch. If I ever have kids Disney won't get a look in.

  • daisy August 3, 2011 at 5:57 PM

one i forgot on my list and cant see mentioned here (forgive me if it has and i missed it)…TAXI DRIVER!!
and another I think is also more than worthy of an inclusion here….THELMA & LOUISE!

    Requeim for a Dream – Darren Aronofsky…
Lord of the Rings Trilogy – favourite books turned into amazing movies…what else can I say?

Willow – childhood favourite (also Val Kilmer before he got fat and old:)

    A Clockwork Orange – mindf***
Pulp Fiction – such a classic
Anchorman – the most quoted movie of all time? Yes. It is totally worthy.

These are the movies that are like my bowl of soup and and a blanket on a rainy day, or whenever I'm stuck at home with a sick day:

Princess Bride- This movie is just so much fun and has so many great lines in it.

Cinema Paradisio- The little boy's love of movies and his friendship with Alfredo is fantastic. And the ending, I cry, every single time… but in a good way.

Kill Bill 1+2: Love the different stories and the fights.
Murder on the Orient Express: I love the cast and the costumes, I have always wanted to take the same trip.
Desparately Seeking Susan: It may be Madonna but it's great, especially the outfits.
The Shawshank Redemption: For once I didn't see the end coming and never do.
Love Actually: The begining in airport always makes me homesick and Emma Thompson just straightening the bed when her world collapses.
Hackers: I have no idea why, maybe the sound track or the location.
The Fifth Element: The costumes, the set and definately the music.
Gone in Sixty Seconds: Having sex or stealing cars, where else could there be a line like that??
The Usual Suspects: When he sees the bottom of the cup and you just know…
    Definately not deep but hey

  • greta @ topography August 2, 2011 at 6:26 PM

#1 is Singin' In the Rain, it is just so beautiful, and clever and funny and silly…

Some of my all time faves:

The Big Sleep – Bogart and Bacall in an adaptation of a Raymond Chandler novel. What's not to like?

Brief Encounter (the original black + white version with Trevor Howard) – the most romantic movie EVER, gets me every time.

Kind Hearts and Coronets – I have seen this film so many times I could present it as a one woman show! My fave of the Ealing Comedies, just so funny.

I'm going through a bit of a black+white movie phase at the moment, can you tell? 🙂

  • claire-elisa August 2, 2011 at 4:06 PM

So Pride and Prejudice for me, the Keira Knightly one. I have it on so much my 3 year old knows it and my husband recognises the music at the start from the other room…and complains of course.

  • Yvette Adams August 2, 2011 at 3:40 PM

My all time favourite has always been THE PRINCESS BRIDE. My family could pretty much quote the entire movie. I read the book recently and it's hugely disappointing!!!

    LABYRINTH
    THE DARK CRYSTAL
    EDWARD SCISSORHANDS

  • Vicky August 2, 2011 at 3:12 PM

"The Trouble With Harry" a little known Alfred Hitchcock movie. It is hilarious and stars Shirly MacLaine and John Forsythe here is the blurb "The trouble with Harry is that he's dead, and everyone seems to have a different idea of what needs to be done with his body…"
Actually I might put it on tonight 🙂

  • Amanda August 2, 2011 at 2:31 PM

I'm a HUGE Tom Hanks fan. I will watch anything he is in or has been in. He's got a new one coming out called Larry Crowne which I'm looking forward to. My all time 'modern' fav is Forrest Gump, I've seen it probably at least 60 times and I've seen it in Flemish!

I also LOVE Parenthood, love that line by the Grandma that says something like 'he liked the merry go round but I loved the roller coaster. The merry go round just goes round and round but the roller coaster!'. Smart Grandma.

Other favs include Chocolat (and most Johnny Depp pics), The English Patient and The Shawshank Redemption.

My favourite old movie is The Great Escape. Just love that movie!

  • librarygirl August 2, 2011 at 2:26 PM

Bobbi, I absolutely agree Shag is a fantastic flick! I also really like:

The Spitfire Grill amazing even if it is very sad.

Say Anything because Ione Skye and John Cusack are the cutest couple ever and Cameron Crowe has never done anything quite as good.

    Dogfight for its beauty

Lawn Dogs which showed me just how amazing Sam Rockwell is

    and

Bright Star because I love John Keats and I imagine him just as he is in this film. Too beautiful.

some faves I can think of right now are:
TOTORO- definitely our FAMILY fave (the movie all 7 of us will watch over & over & over again) you can add any other Miyazaki film here too…..
LOVE ACTUALLY- cause I am a sook & I like the portrayal of the differing relationships
ETERNAL SUNSHINE- because I love the portrayal of wacky family love as being really fulfilling & fabulous.
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD- because who could ver believe that a film could come THAT close to being as amazing as the book!
KOYAANISQATSI- because it was the first film to show me films could be great without any spoken words….
VULVER- because it is gorgeous in it's spanish kookiness and Penelope Cruz is magnificent.
SINGING IN THE RAIN- because it has the most awesomest dance sequences and exquisite costuming
THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY- cause I could stare at Clint FOREVER and never get enough & because I love old spaghetti westerns…..

i think i will stop now.

Absolute numero, uno top of the heap is:
"Amelie" Grown up fairytale. The colours. The whimsy. The characters. The clever devices. The atmosphere. Paris. Saw it with my son when he was a young teen. We both noticed all the teeny little things planted throughout the film and adored the music and cried at the end.
The Dark Crystal. Magical, mystical, eerie, visual, dark muppeteering.
Neverending Story. Luckdragon. Rock Monster. Bastion and his horse. The swamp of Sadness.
To Kill a Mockingbird. The best transference from book to film there ever was. Gregory Peck IS Atticus Finch.
Pretty in Pink. Soundtrack. Frocks. Pink Karmann Ghia. Brilliant dialogue. Duckie Dale. Harry Dean.
The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds. Title says it all. Paul Newman/Joanna Woodward.
Sybil. Amazing. Sally Field. Multiple personalities.Traumatic.
Silkwood. Meryl Streep. Cher. Kurt Russell (the only film I have been able to bear him in). Nuclear meltdown, cover-ups. Suspicious death. Brilliant.
Sophie's Choice. Still can't think of "that scene" without feeling heartaching agony and overwhelming sadness.
Parenthood. Anyone who is a member of a family. Any sort of family, will find something that resonates in this film. Seen it about 40 times. Never grows old.
Sheeeeeesshhh so many more, I could go on and on.

Now & Then – I watched this to death as a kid and was so jealous of the fact that they all lived on the same street and could sneak in to each others houses at night! love!

Somewhere – my fave coppola movie ever… i havent been able to get it out of my head, i love how slow and deliberate it is.

Romy & Michelle's Highschool Reunion… say no more.

  • Donnell August 2, 2011 at 1:36 PM

The Princess Bride and Amelie are two of my favorites and have already been mentioned. I would also add Pirate Radio and The Science of Sleep.

Ghost World (because enid reminds me of a young me and seymour is so cool), Buffalo 66 (because i just adore everything about this film), Pee Wee's Big Adventure (because I love Pee Wee and his bike and his home), Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (this is everyone's fav right? no need to explain!) Mars Attacks (stellar cast, Tim Burton directed, awesome sci-fi retro comic lunacy!) and Ed Wood (Burton again, motley cast of characters)

  • Carolyn August 2, 2011 at 1:19 PM

Love Actually – Emma Thompson is so real
The Apartment – French film with Monica Belluci (not the Jack Lemmon one)
Witness for the Prosecution – for the twist in the end
    And….
The King's Speech -great performances all round

  • Lauren M August 2, 2011 at 1:16 PM

Howl's Moving Castle – whenever I am in a lounging mood, I love to put this on. It really is a great story.
The Princess Bride – I first watched this after years of hearing about it, and boy had I been missing out. Inigo and Fezzik are my favourites.
Charade – Cary Grant, enough said.
The BBC '95 Pride and Prejudice – not sure if this is considered a movie or mini series, but I tend to watch this at least once a year. Jennifer Ehle is the perfect Lizzy.

I am an 80s girl all the way….I loved growing up with Labyrinth and the Dark Crystal. I used to watch them back to back when I was sick and home from school. I still find watching them on a weekend afternoon always makes me feel better. And who doesn't find it hilarious with David Bowie in tights??

  • Bobbi August 2, 2011 at 12:52 PM

FAVORITE OF ALL TIME: Shag: The Movie.

    Three other top contenders:
    Dirty Dancing.
