Hello

K is for…

August 12, 2007

Kiss…
A caress with the lips.. with the power to both heal and delight. There are never enough kisses, as far as I am concerned, and we should be dealing with the kiss deficit, before any budget deficit.

Kirsty..
But don’t worry, Kirsty… I won’t tell why.. and thanks you are ace.

Kitchen…
I used to spend a HUGE amount of time in the kitchen.. baking all our own bread and treats and delicious dinners.. Every meal had at least 3 courses.. it was my previous creative endeavour I guess.. and still is – but in a much smaller way – as only one door divides our living room and kitchen from the Mikes store – and no-one makes a smell-proof door to fit a Victorian doorway.. so even a piece of toast makes Mikes smell all deliciously homey… So no more cooking – at least while the shop is open.

My kitchen is yellow – with red and white polkadot curtains covering the open shelving. It’s full of my ridiculous collection of cups and jars. It’s waiting for us to put a print on the wall above the oven.. but i need to find just the right one. Cam built the kitchen with a friend, and it cost about $1500 from start to finish. Now there’s a budget renovation – but it’s not our building – and we can’t take it with us.. so $1500 suits us just fine!

Kindness.
The most important thing (after health). I live my life trying to be kind to everyone i meet.. and kind to my family (not always succeeding) and kind to myself (also failing miserably a lot of the time). Max told me today that I am too ‘squishy’ and ‘soft’ and ‘nice’. And I know this is a failing, but also a strength… If you have to be one thing, and one thing only.. be kind.

Knead.
Back on the kitchen theme.. but i just wanted to say.. that when I was pregnant with my first child (20 years ago – I’m such an old bag!) – I read a book by Shelia Kitzinger.. and in it – apart from all the usual pregnancy and baby advice.. was a suggestion that you should bake a loaf of bread each day.. because no matter how much mess and chaos surrounds life with a new baby – you can whack that loaf in the oven and have the house smelling delicious (and be eating well), come dinner time. I love to bake bread – I love to knead it – I love the floury messiness, the sour yeasty smell, the bubbly chemically alchemy of it all. Bake bread – (even bad bread is good toasted).

Knave
Another Nanna-ism. I prefer Knave to Jack.. although I never was much chop at cards anyway. My experience pretty much involves playing poker for tic-tacs over the Christmas Holidays at my Nans’ house. Such a good word though. Knave. He’s the guy that stole the tarts.

xx mikes

Your K words are wonderful choices and your kitchen one spurred on my K word for the A-Z meme. Thanks so much!

I agree with Tamara wholeheartedly and you of course Pip, that kindness is a super-important trait and it brings a special shine of loveliness to every encounter.
A trip to Mikes without your kindness would be a sad day indeed.
