:: iPhone Photography Tips – Focus & Exposure

I’ve done a HEAP of phone photography courses this year and I thought I would share some of the things I learned in some punchy little posts! Here goes!

When you use the camera on your iPhone, touch the screen not only to set the Auto Focus (AF) but also to set the Auto Exposure (AE). If you tap around at different parts on the screen before you shoot – you can change the exposure of your image. For instance:

Tap a dark part of the screen/image-to-be and your screen/photo will lighten up (and a yellow square will appear where you tap)
Tap a light part and the image will darken.
Tap something in the medium tones (like a beige colour in the image, for instance) and you’ll get a more evenly lit image.

Tap around until you are happy with the way your photo is exposed and then, when you find that sweet spot, hold your finger down to lock both the exposure and the focal point. A yellow banner will appear at the top of screen to confirm you’re all locked in.

Then snap away!

If you don’t want your Auto Exposure AND Auto Focus controlled with a single tap like this, you can try taking photos in an app like Camera+ where you can separate them out. The iPhone naturally wants to control them with one tap, so that’s good to know!

See you next time for more ace Pip iPhone tips!
