:: I Miss Tuna…

June 16, 2011

Sigh.
I am such a BAD vegetarian.
I am up to Day 15.
I will totally make it to the end.
I have not wavered….
But I really do miss TUNA!
You can throw things at me, if you like.
I totally deserve it.
Please don’t throw tins of tuna…

xx Pip

I'd say, if you are really craving, you may have to give into it – if you go full vege you can wean yourself of it in time. It depends on what works for you, cold turkey, (heh heh!) or cut back bit by bit. I went veg by cutting back over about 3 years.
Even by not eating as much meat you are still doing the world and yourself a good deed.

Guaranteed soon you won't be able to stand the smell of tuna! I have been a vegetarian for 15 years and I cannot even walk past a can of tuna without catching a whiff of that oily fishy pong.. blah! Hope that helps you detox πŸ™‚

If you are interested, use mashed chickpeas or tempeh in place of the tuna in tuna salad. So good! Works in sandwiches or on crackers.

I used to LOVE tuna when I ate meat, but after such a long time as a vegetarian, the idea of eating fish now makes me green around the gills (pardon the pun)! But I know how you feel, when I was on a totally vegan diet I could have KILLED for a poppyseed bagel with cream cheese, cucumber & black pepper (fake cream cheese just doesn't cut it).

I know it's not the same, but why not have some veg sushi, or if tuna salad is your thing, use all the other ingredients you normally would & some boiled egg or seitan for protein? And of course, reading all the horrifying information on overfishing is good incentive!

I had dinner with friends at a local Buddhist restaurant last night & they have all kinds of weird fishy things made out of tofu, gluten, etc on the menu…"abalone", "prawn", "jellyfish"(?!)…I'm never game to try them as I'm not keen on meat replacements that are trying too hard to resemble the real thing, but the idea of some weird agar-based jellyfish is intriguing. I wish someone else would order one! Another local Asian veg cafe does this delicious seitan wrapped in seaweed, coated in spicy crumbs & fried. Sanitarium used to do a yummy fillet o' fish style thingy too – but they stopped making it!

Anyway, congratulations on making it this far & all the best for the remaining time!

Hmm… so I guess it would be mean of me to mention that I had a really delicious homemade tuna sandwich for lunch today? I've got some left in the fridge… I can ship it over to you; shouldn't take more than a couple of weeks from New York! πŸ˜‰
Hang in there, Pip–you're doing great!

Oh Pip, I know your pain! I was a vegetarian for about 8 years, and it was fish that made the whole thing unravel. To this day a trusty can of quality tuna is my go to meal…

But! You can do this! Only 15 days to go and they will FLY by!

  • TashMac June 17, 2011 at 12:54 PM

Your funny Pip, your posts always put a smile on my dial πŸ™‚

  • Jayne June 17, 2011 at 9:10 AM

Don't feel bad- I call myself a vegetarian and I still eat tuna. I don't even drink cows milk, yet I eat fish. I'm a 'selectarian'.

  • Christine June 17, 2011 at 5:21 AM

Day 15 oh wow! I was always a pescatarian because growing up near the ocean with fresh fish I could never swear off seafood. But now I'm in meat loving Germany and it's harder to find good seafood and to avoid meat all together. I wish you luck!

  • Snehal June 17, 2011 at 3:44 AM

Hi Pip, hang in there…you are half way through and you can definitely pull it!

I definitely believe in vegetarianism but you shouldn't fight strong cravings..so at the end of it, have a whole can of tuna πŸ˜€

Good luck for the second half!

Worry not, friend! (longtime veggie speaking here) there are some pretty fab mock tuna sandwich recipes floating around on the interwebs. They're made w chickpeas/garbanzo beans and taste freakishly like the real deal. Here's an example from all recipes http://allrecipes.com/recipe/mock-tuna-salad/ but, if you do a search I'm sure you'll find something to quell your craving!

  • Peachey Dream June 16, 2011 at 11:11 PM

Pescatarian/ Vegaquarianism is the way to go! I have been one for two years, and it's great. I know I'm not what people would call a 'propper' vegetarian, but I know I'm still doing something good for the world.
    Good luck! xx

you can do eeeetttt *not eat the tune I mean

  • Pip June 16, 2011 at 8:01 PM

Aw. Thanks so much for your advice, you guys! I am determined to do this. I think these are the kinds of challenges I need. To Tuna or not To Tuna..?! I have never thought too much about what Tuna means to me… and now I get to choose whether it is in my future eating plans or not. That is a good thing!

  • Gracie June 16, 2011 at 7:58 PM

I'm in week 3 too, I decided to do it when you mentioned it! I'm finding it really easy though, probably because I only ate meat about once a week or fortnight. I stopped eating tuna about a year ago when I found out the way they fish it. If you want to go back to eating it you could buy pole caught tuna. It's more expensive but a fair price I think and so much kinder to the oceans.

  • lindsey clare June 16, 2011 at 7:37 PM

I would find it hard to give up tuna. It's such an easy, quick protein. And yummy πŸ™‚

I did read that Sirena are one of the worst, environmentally speaking. This makes me sad because in my mind it's the best quality!

Anyway. Stick with it Pip. I've experimented with vegetarianism and I do think it's very rewarding. As long as you are getting enough protein which I'm sure you am. Are you still eating eggs?

  • littlechrissy June 16, 2011 at 7:03 PM

Oh wow I'm feeling it too – I'm a two week old vegetarian but the thing I miss most is bacon the night after a few drinks.

  • demie June 16, 2011 at 6:38 PM

no we won`t do that! try to see some mediterranean recipes- is a lot of veg food there that can propobly help you : )

  • Maggie June 16, 2011 at 6:36 PM

even just cutting down on meat meals is a great thing, so you are doing a fantastic job no matter what! On my part I never had a problem with fish/seafood, because even when I did eat meat I always thought it tasted gross, and smelt gross πŸ™‚

  • trudi@maudeandme June 16, 2011 at 6:31 PM

I call myself a "fish eating vegetarian". Over 20 years ago I decided to give up meat, but failed with the fish and seafood. It's got to work for you.

  • Miss Snow June 16, 2011 at 5:23 PM

Not only are you NOT a bad vegetarian – you are a GREAT vegetarian! If you are missing tuna so bad, yet you are still sticking to it, that shows the willpower you have because you really want to do this. Good luck with the rest of the month!

  • Michelle June 16, 2011 at 4:52 PM

I miss tuna too. I don't eat it any more because of similar reasons to Lorena. But I did love that Sirena, both the tin and the tuna….

  • Lorena June 16, 2011 at 4:28 PM

Once I read all the info about fish and seafood, the toxins, the overfishing, the destruction of the waterways and oceans, I never looked back… don't miss it at all and refuse to feed it to my family and friends. http://www.peta.org/living/vegetarian-living/Top-10-Reasons-Not-to-Eat-Tuna.aspx
PS. Verification code "SWEET", how coastal 80s!

  • Caz June 16, 2011 at 4:24 PM

You do make me laugh Pip! I love my canned tuna too (especially Sirena) but my kids don't share the same love so I'm eating less than I used to πŸ™ Keep up the good work witht he vego thing. Have you visited the stonesoup blog for inspiration – very simple, very pure…

  • Tenille Evans June 16, 2011 at 4:19 PM

OH I totally get this! I am one of those strange vegetarians that regularly drools over other people's steak and seafood. Just because I choose not to eat it, doesn't mean I don't know how delicious it is!

  • Sian Lile June 16, 2011 at 3:59 PM

hee! i've never tried tuna! have been a vegetarian since i was about 13 (vegan now) and hadnt had it by then. here in the uk, you can get vegan tuna?!! is there any where you are?

  • SB June 16, 2011 at 3:55 PM

Could you consider a vegaquarian turn after this? -Susie

  • Em June 16, 2011 at 3:46 PM

Bahaha! Too funny. Tuna or later you were going to crave something πŸ™‚

  • Katrina Higham June 16, 2011 at 3:18 PM

You can do it Pip….it is all about mind over matter. Keep strong!!! πŸ™‚

  • CurlyPops June 16, 2011 at 3:15 PM

Oh no! I couldn't live without tuna.
I even had tuna on toast for dinner lastnight.
