Yesterday I started making this rug. It took about one hour to make this much rug. Wowee. How great is that?! The ‘yarn’ is from Hooked Zpagetti. They sent me a starter pack (which is two skeins of yarn and a big crochet hook) a while ago and I have been itching to make something. I got this far with the two skeins they sent, so I am going to need to buy another 3 to make this big enough, I think. Totally a no-brainer project. I used my Crocheted Pot-Holder pattern and just made it bigger! I want to make lots of these!
If you are super industrious, you can make your own ‘yarn’ from old sheets and things you have lying about. Have a look at The Vintage Chica to see her method. I think that a rotary cutter and a cutting mat would be totally useful, too!

I am teaching myself to crochet, and attempting this rug, using the pot holder pattern…Do I follow it exactly – i.e. start with 4 chain stitches? Or do you do more than 4 to begin?

I've been working on a rag rug for about a year, adding to it every time I get my hands on some scrap fabric. It's starting to get dirty, though, and I don't know how to clean it. It's about 4 feet across now.

Looks really cute! I made a small oval one out of old jeans once. It was a bear to make, but is so sturdy for the boys' room & had frayed in the best way. 🙂

This looks great. I too am making a rug, except I'm using a much smaller hook and I'm using red twine. It's taking for ever! I looked about for a large supply of thick rop, but it was either too expensive or a very dull colour. I'm so glad you shared Hoooked Zpagetti with us!

I think I might have some sheets that need ripping ….. and I have a giant hook for my Tunisian Crochet that would be perfect.

You are a clever one. I am knitting dishcloths – because I can't buy the cloth ones anymore and refuse to use something disposable. Now, where do you find your pure cotton yarn? I can only find cottons with a little acrylic and would much prefer cotton.

Brilliant! I've got a pattern for a rug made from sheeting strips. You've inspired me to give it a go Pip.
It is a 12mm hook!
You don't get tired wrists if you make sure to let out lots of yarn so there is no resistance…
AND use the pot holder pattern… each round adds an extra treble stitch to the pattern. So you add an extra stitch between the TWO TREBLE clusters. Then just watch your work. If it's curling upwards add a few stitches at even points… and if it's floppy and wavy, take out a few stitches in the next round! Easy PEASY!

The rug looks great! I was going to crochet a rug too – I have a couple of flanny sheets with rips in them that seemed to scream rugs to me! Can just picture bubba Joe rolling around on them in front of the fire!

That rug is ACE – I have rugs plans too this winter after I get off the mitten making fetish that has currently overtaken this winters MUST complete last years queen size blanket. How do you find the super huge crochet hook? is it fatiguing on your wrists? Oh I simply cant wait to make a rug!
