The news. Ugh. I like to stay informed, know what’s happening and read the finer details, but I don’t like a lot of the subject matter… perhaps you feel the same?
On Facebook I’ve started unfollowing any site that posts ‘click bait’ – those bait-y links that tell you half the story in sensationalised language and beckon you to click through to their site.
I have a list of news and culture sites I do trust. Sites like The Guardian, BBC and ABC… But I must say I find it a bit of a challenge to a) get all the info I want and b) avoid the sad, sensationalist or downright crappy content.
More and more sites I used to like reading are falling into the click bait trap. The language they use in their teasers or headlines seems to follow the same formula (hello Upworthy! hello Daily Mail! hello others!) It’s a samey samey world of outrage, fear mongering, viral videos and shock tactics a lot of the time. Ugh.
So I was wondering, how do you filter what you see online. How do you process the constant bad news that hits us over and over? How do you make sure you see and read good or important stuff while avoiding the rubbishy bits? Do you find it a challenge? Are you annoyed that big or respected sites are all starting to speak the same way and rehash the same stuff? Are you getting tired of inspiring videos?!
What do you think? And which sites do you return to again and again for quality reading or info?
