I have some very nice friends working on a very great show on my very favourite tv channel. Yep. I can’t say more than that, but it’s a show you are going to L.O.V.E. (No, it’s not a craft show, btw!) Susie was wondering if you can help them with a couple of segments they are doing for said show…?! We figured that someone out there would know the very right person for this… or people… maybe you know more than one crafty doyenne?! Here’s what Susie says ::
A documentary series is looking to feature people/artists who work in the following mediums:
Black velvet paintings, sand art, string art, macramé, copper art, cross stitch (and the like)
We’re after those who’ve been doing it since it was first in vogue – who might be oblivious to the kitsch beauty of what they do, but love it nonetheless. If this sounds like someone you might know – or if you have a creative idea for trying to get in with that crowd, we’d be extremely grateful for your help! Thanks so much. Do you know someone like this?! Have a think and chat with the people you know and let’s see if we can help!
xx Pip

There are some amazing volunteers at the Powerhouse Museum's Lace Study Centre. They have untold patience and a wicked sense of humour. They make underwater scenes, cars and amazing sculptural pieces as well as the traditional stuff. check it out here: http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/lacestudycentre/
Your friends could try Church-ran craft groups (I know in some States the Baptist Church run very popular groups), Needle Work Society (I think that is what they call themselves), and the CWA (as noted above). There must be groups/clubs etc for all the crafts you mentioned. Good luck!
Susie! That would be so great!!! Thank you! xx
Hi Pip
Is it okay if I post this via CAE Staff intranet, Facebook and Twitter? I'm sure many of our tutors would fit this bill (or know people who do)!
Cheers, Susie
Pip and Susie, the girl that just posted a comment is your GAL. i just emailed her before I read the comments to ask her if I could put her forward for this and then realised that she was the last person to comment! EmilyKate, check her out…
Oh, this sounds like such a cool project! Kitsch is totally my jam, but I collect it (kitschy ceramics) rather than create it myself. I cannot WAIT for this series to come on TV!
I haven't done the string art for more than 35 years but I well remember my brother and myself making a number and then trying to sell them on the side of the road in our little holiday township. My Mum did the black fabric and my brother nailed in all the nails. I loved the thread winding but as it was an exact art, and I was the least particular of the three, it wasn't always left to me. I believe my brother may still have the New York skyline picture which was fairly big and definitely a favourite of mine. Cherrie
Kitsch is so very very cool 😉
Hi Pip – you should ask them to tap into the CWAs around Australia (Country Women;s Association). Cheers, Tia
Do you think stamping and making greeting cards would fit into the "kitsch" category?
