Hello

Great Day For Up!

September 6, 2008

It’s Father’s Day! Hurrah! It’s also 4.50am – the Father in the house is fast asleep. As is the son who is not on a sleep-over. I am not asleep. I am UP. Why am I up? Well – apart from being a bit excited about all that is planned for the next week or so, I’m up because the cat that lay sleeping on my bed decided it was time for me to get up.

I’m also up because the Fridge With A Mind Of It’s Own started beeping noisily insisting that it’s door was open (which it wasn’t). Our Fridge does this at least four times a day – and often in the dead of night too. It’s kind of cute. Kind of annoying. You have to open the fridge and press a button to stop the beep. Not fun at 4am, admittedly. But charming that an appliance can have personality, I think. Like our lazy dishwasher. Also not working properly, making nasty popping sounds and generally being an anarchist. And my laptop keyboard with the squeaky LEFT shift key. But that’s another story.

I’m up because the birds are chirping in the middle of the night – why do they do that? It’s not just a Saturday night bust-out. It’s every night. In fact ‘Up With The Birds’ in my hood means up at about 12.20pm. They go all night around here – I think it might be the International Chirping Team, actually. They are DARN good. You’ve never seen such stamina.

I’m up because Ari got into our bed and nudged me way over to the edge. To the ‘falling out of bed’ abyss. And I don’t like to fall. In fact it is my greatest phobia. Getting up seemed a better option. And far more dignified then thumping onto the floorboards, i think. Or worse, teetering on the abyss, a cheek’s breath away from falling.

I’m up because I am thinking about that Fair Trade INSTANT Coffee I saw at Jasper’s and wondering if it is nice and wishing I had some now. To help me wake up. Even though i prefer PROPER coffee – from a machine – but our machine needs servicing – so that’s not an option. Luckily Fitzroy has one coffee machine for every two people – so it’s only a jump to the left or a step to the right to be second in line for a Cup o Jumbo.

I’m up because I’m needing to get to the shops as soon as they open to get the ingredients for these delicous BLTs (for Father’s Day breakfast). With avocado. And mayonnaise. I feel my arteries hardening as we speak – in a good way, you know?

I’m up thinking about the sweet card that Ari made – ‘Dear Dad. Happy Father’s Day. Thank you for everything you have done for me.’ And wondering if Max is warm enough whilst sleeping at Zen’s house.

Hmm…. I think I might put my shoes on and go for a big walk. After all, I’m up now, aren’t I? May as well seize the day. I hope your Father’s Day is lovely and you get some of the cake!

Plum Cake for Father’s Day

125g butter, softened
125g caster sugar
1 lemon
4 eggs
250g plain flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
¼ cup milk
825g plums (fresh, when in season)
Cinnamon
Icing sugar

Preheat the oven to 180 or 360. Grease (or spray) a 22cm round springform tin and line the base with baking paper. Cream the softened butter and sugar. Add the zest of 1/2 the lemon. Beat well. Add the eggs one at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition, until the mixture is light in colour and airy and creamy. Sift the flour and baking powder together and gently fold into the mixture. Add the milk and mix until smooth. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin. Decorate with the drained plums, (cut in half and seeded). Dust with cinnamon. Bake in the oven for approximately 45 minutes. While still hot, sprinkle with icing sugar. Please serve with nice cream or icecream. Thank you.
