:: Dry July for Non-Crap Peeps

June 30, 2012
{Cam & Dave}
Yes. It’s nearly July. Otherwise known as DRY July. Are you taking part? Dry July is a sponsored alcohol free month, to raise awareness and funds for cancer patients.   That’s a very important thing to do, right?
Some AMAZING people I know have battled cancer, sometimes unsuccessfully. For instance, my late father in law, possibly the nicest man I have ever known. Cancer kicked his butt.  We were TOTALLY devastated when we lost him. It’s very crap, cancer.
You might know that I am not one to sit back and do nothing. I am one to DO things. Yep.  One small thing I can do is to participate in Dry July and help to raise money for people who really need it. That’s a good way of walking the walk and not just talking the talk.  I’m big on that. So, I’m doing Dry July again and I’m supporting the Royal Melbourne Hospital.  I’m also looking for sponsors and people to be on my team.
Join my team or sponsor me here.
The other thing that is great about Dry July is that it starts some good conversations about drinking. I know a lot of us love to have a glass of wine or two or more, but my family has a history of tricky friendships with booze. Bordering a bit on frenemies, ya know?  SO, I like to keep things in check in that department, lest the ghost of Boozers Past sets its sights on me. Not happening.
Maybe this sounds like your family too? Or maybe it doesn’t. Whichever it is, I think it’s good to aim for a few booze free days each week, and Dry July is a way of affirming that… except for a whole month.  It’s a good way to think about how drinking might be affecting your life, and whether it’s working out for you. Maybe it is. I don’t know. That part is your call. Cheers!
ANYHOO. Enough of that and enough of me and my family history.
I would love you to help me with this. Do you think you can help? I am going to launch a giveaway this week, and everyone who sponsors me, donates or joins my team will be in the running to win a prize.  What do you say? Good idea?
If you’d like to donate something to the Dry July give away on this very blog (complete with loving links back to your website and a HUGE thank you from me!) email me via the CONTACT link at the top of this page.  Or maybe you just want to join in?  Join the Meet Me At Mike’s Dry July Team here. Or donate or sponsor us here.  No amount is too small!
xx Pip
PS : And even though I have had about 4 glasses of wine in June, I shall go wild and have a final sip tonight, toasting every single person who has been touched by cancer in any way. Because cancer is crap and people are not.  I am toasting you, not-crap-peeps.

Hi Pip & Team… Good luck with the fundraising for the Royal. Its such a nessasary fundraiser. Esp as cancer affects 1 in 2 Aussies. My uncle spent so much time in the Mater in brisbane, and he couldnt recommend it enough…such brilliant services. so heres some support for the sister state's Hospital services. xox Lauri McD.
PS:forgive me for calling the Royal Melbourne Hospital "the Mater"… thats what we call the brisbane hospital! eek!

    Hi Pip,
Thanks so much for your passion and support for the RMH… It's people like you and your team who make all the difference.
You're right, cancer is crap. But thank goodness for all the non-crap peeps (as you so succinctly put it) who are doing what they can, when they can to make the whole cancer journey slightly less crap for those going through the crappiest of times. It means a lot to everyone here at the hospital.

Hey Pip! I read this the other day but just wanted to come back & say it was a really good post. It's not often you divulge personal things about yourself or your family so it was nice to hear about WHy you are doing Dry July.xx

    Hi Pip,

I'm hearing you on the whole family dodgy booze relationships thing. I don't drink at all any more – seen too much damage done to people I love and I feel so much healthier not drinking. I think Australia does need to have a good think about its drinking culture. I love Dry July making people think about the health benefits of cutting down and hellosundaymorning.com.au which tries to change binge drinking behaviour. Go Team!

Thanks for the reminder Pip, I am on the team again, has it really been a year?? I'm off to spread the word and hopefully help the team raise lots of money for the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
