This weekend heaps of Australians celebrated our official national day. Others mourned the circumstances surrounding the colonisation of our big island. We’re a conflicted bunch, and rightly so.
Many of us love our national celebratory weekend and have nice times with the peeps we love. Others ignore it altogether and spend time doing normal stuff, waiting for it to pass. It’s certainly a time for reflection at the very least, as the First Fleet’s arrival on our sunny shores sparked horrific times for this country’s traditional indigenous population.
I never know what to do on this long weekend. Sometimes we attend the Survival Day events. Other times we eat lamingtons and mutter things about the humanity of our nation. It’s a confusing time and a weird day to us.
Some people seem to know where this day fits into their lives and the best way to mark the weekend, celebrate the good bits of Australia and mourn the bad. I don’t 100% know where it fits into mine, except that it’s important to think about what Australia Day means to indigenous Australians. And to talk to my kids about all the pieces of Australia’s history, not just the whitewashed version. While Australia Day/Invasion Day/Survival Day has passed us by for another year, the issues it raises should be considered more than once a year, in my opinion.
So, this weekend we took things easy. We hung out at home, continuing Ari’s birthday celebrations and trying to beat the heat. I marked the conflicted holiday with a (confusing) Australian classic film ‘Picnic At Hanging Rock’ (and lots of crochet and snacks.) How good is Picnic At Hanging Rock? I read the book lots of times as a teenager and it was the very first ‘grown up’ film I saw at the cinema as a young adult. Today I read the final Chapter 18 of Picnic At Hanging Rock too. It was omitted from the original book, but was released as The Secret of Hanging Rock in 1987. Wow. Joan Lindsay was an amazingly kooky writer, right?! I love that the story has links to time travel/Dreamtime/weird altered states/chaos. It seems very fitting, somehow. It sort of sums up this weekend in lots of ways.
