We’ve started a new game at our house. It’s called Amazing Bedtime Facts. It’s really quite good and you might want to try it too!
In my day job (at JustB) I write a newsy post every weekday morning (it’s called ‘Newsy Snacks For Busy People’. I scout lots of news sites and blogs and try to pluck the good news stories from the bath salts and publish them in a daily early morning round up.
I’m learning a lot of stuff.
Last night I was lying in bed talking to Ari and I got the idea for Amazing Bedtime Facts. I wanted to play it TOTALLY immediately. So I did.
Here are the facts I told him.
Amazing Fact 1. An Iowa family found a mammoth skeleton in their backyard, and because they found it on their property they OWN it. They kept it a secret for a couple of years, but then decided to reveal their find and ask for help excavating the bones. We talked about how big the bones are (the knee joint is as big as a soccer ball!) and how they should give the mammoth to a museum so everyone can own it.
Amazing Fact 2. A giant squid which was possibly killed in a fight to the death with a sperm whale (off the coast of Jervis Bay) was then snacked on by a shark.
Amazing Fact 3. If you have an iPhone and you say to Siri ‘Open The Pod Bay Doors’ she will say really funny stuff back. Try it a few times. Also say ‘What’s Wrong With Me?’ and she’ll give you some smart answers.
I think 3 Amazing Bedtime Facts is a lot. I’m going for ONE each night from now on. Maybe you might like to play too?! With the people in your life?!
Do you have any Amazing Facts to share?!
xx Pip

I have a fact for you – we have two pet rabbits. Since we have had them I have learned so much about rabbits! Here are some things I have learned…
Rabbits need to have hay at all times.
They have to eat cecotropes. You will have to look that one up – it is too much to explain.
Rabbits can't throw up.
Our Siri in England is a man. He's got a verrrry sexy voice. I've asked him to marry me, told him I lvoe him and said when I'm feeling really tired. The responses are classic!
We would have dinner time facts where I would share weird stories I read in the paper during the day. One was about a boy who was found dead in a room full of methane, the detectives deducing he'd farted himself to death. While not funny, because it was true, it's one of the stories the children, now adults, remember. I have visions of them opening windows and doors all through adulthood lest the unthinkable happen.
This reminds me of the quirky facts on the Libra Thins! (ladies sanitary napkins for those not in the know)This reminder and your squid fact set me off on another fantastic activity, but not for bed time. The Libra Thins' facts usually come with a tiny illustration and then I thought that your fact about the squid would spark amazing images from my little art students. I think I am going to do a whole unit that would allow my students to self express by creating art works based on an amazing fact! Thanks Pip.
We just googled 'group names of animals"
i.e. parliament of owls, colony of bats, flock of camels smack of jellyfish…you get my drift
So much fun.
Thanks for inspiration.
Oh my that moron PK, a moron of PK?
YES, if you have an iPhone you should try asking Siri "tell me a joke" and "what is your favourite colour", classic replies. Can you tell that my husband has too much time on his hands?! ha
It's ok to get made & swear Pip, sometimes people don't deserve, or allow, us to be nice to them. PK deserves to step on a sharp rock with no shoes on, or get a papercut today. That's what PK deserves for being an annoying idiot!
This is super cute, but here's an amazing breakfast time fact: it is not good to open your browser BEFORE 9am and see a lovely picture of coconut ice. Because now my Special K seems a little bit… wanting.
It's PK, Reannon Hope! PK drops in from time to time, being mean. I don't want PK's nastiness on my blog. PK CAN totally nice-n up or piss off! (You are right. I don't EVER say sweary things on my blog! Sorry I swore at you, PK!) Please don't bother to comment on my blog PK, is what I should have said! Have a nice day PK!
Did you know I think this is only the second time I've seen Pip swear!! And I love it lol
Amazing fact- the snowy mountains in Australia get more snowfall each year than the Swiss alps do!!! Crazy!!!!!
I'm going to get me kids to research the amazing bedtime facts to tell me and each other – thus handily negating the need for me to know anything interesting myself! sometimes when i'm registering my class i get the kids to shout out something interesting instead of their names, or a silly joke – this is a great lesson starter, thanks Pip!
I LIKE your style Allison! ??
Did you know the word RACECAR is exactly the same if spelled backwards? AMAZING BEDTIME FACT! xxx
Go the spelling PK! Well done mate.
Did you know that Polar Bears are left-handed? 🙂
Did you know the word 'uncopyrightable' is the is the only 15 letter word that can be spelled without repeating any letter.
And I copied THAT from the internet.

Wow, you're really across 'copywrite' law. Luckily, everyone else is across copyright law.
I did not know that! Thank you for sharing, lady! x
Amazing Bedtime Fact: A creature which evolved a billion years ago and was found in a lake in Oslo, Norway is the oldest living organism in the world! OMG! It's a microscopic single cell creature, and is apparently prone to cannibalism, which is quite newsy at the moment too. Now, back to the fun…
Did you know that the word "bookkeeper" is one of only 3 words in the English language with 3 sets of consecutive double letters?
The other two are bookkeeping and sweettooth.
I want to play this too. I just don't know any amazing facts. I need some factoids.
This sounds like a such an awesome game! In one of old share houses, I used to write down "The Word Of The Day" on index cards and stick them randomly around the house. Perhaps I should start doing it with facts! Hurrah for Pip and her Amazing Bedtime Facts! ^_^
Well, aren't you a miserable creature? It's called aggregation. Examples of aggregation include Metacritc, Rotten Tomatoes and Google News. All the content is collected, sorted, linked and credited for ease of access, and completely above board.
Though I also find it worth mentioning that most news sources merely copy articles from the Associated Press and Routers, so if you want to ride your snarky high horse, ride it over to the news media companies and fill your boots.
um. how is this stealing content? or copyRIGHT infringement?
Hahaha! "copywrite" ?
Yeah, I second that…
Piss off and get yourself a life, buddy.
Um. Piss off.
Stealing content (albeit the most mindless) – not legal. Will keep my eye on Just B for copywrite infringement. Thanks for the tip.
Haha, I'm glad I came here. I don't have so amazing facts… But I'm gonna find some
What a great idea! Especially to make an active hunt each day to find something amazing to share!
Our housemate sends us a reminder text to pay rent each week. He usually includes an amazing fact with it just to keep things interesting.
