Yesterday all the kids were off doing their own thing (!) so (in the spirit of Christmas denial) Cam and I went for a wander down to Mario’s for lunch. If you live in Melbourne or have been to Melbourne you may have been there too. If you haven’t, you should totally visit if/when you are in town. It’s rock solid and totes Melbs. (I had Penne Matriciana and Cam had Spaghetti Carbonara. #yum)
As I was sitting amidst the white tablecloths and the bustling staff, I was reminded of all the times I’d been there before. On the day of Rin’s wedding we stopped outside and ran in for fortifying coffees. When a very close pal broke up with her very serious boyfriend, she flew to Melbourne and we lunched there together and talked about dumb boys. There are lots of other times too. Chats with Rin. Late snacks with Yvonne. Lunch with Anna. Prezzies with Michelle. Coffee with Gem. And things that predate my current family, even! Mario’s is like that, stretching back into other times and places. It’s part of Melbourne life, really. It’s part of my life, anyway.
After Mario’s we wandered into the Brunswick Street Bookstore. I charged in, as is my habit with bookstores, eyes firmly on the prize. Cam was polite and waited until the doorway had cleared a bit more, allowing Nick Cave free passage out onto the street. NICK CAVE?! It’s true. I was too busy to notice, but Cam was all like, ‘Did you see Nick Cave?’ I was all like, ‘NO WAY?!’ and ran out onto the street. I actually saw him too, but mostly the back of his head as he headed north. Dang. He was wearing slacks.
