:: I Am Making A Rug…

May 23, 2011

Yesterday I started making this rug.  It took about one hour to make this much rug. Wowee.  How great is that?!  The ‘yarn’ is from Hooked Zpagetti.  They sent me a starter pack (which is two skeins of yarn and a big crochet hook) a while ago and I have been itching to make something.  I got this far with the two skeins they sent, so I am going to need to buy another 3 to make this big enough, I think.  Totally a  no-brainer project.  I used my Crocheted Pot-Holder pattern and just made it bigger!  I want to make lots of these!

If you are super industrious, you can make your own ‘yarn’ from old sheets and things you have lying about.  Have a look at The Vintage Chica to see her method. I think that a rotary cutter and a cutting mat would be totally useful, too!

What do you think?!

xx Pip

I am making dish cloths and dish towels too… a stripey take on this pattern…  I am just practicing…

Looks fab! I love the color…which starter pack did you use? I want to do one but have my eye on their salmon- orange and grey-slate as colors…I wonder if they could make a custom starter pack? Thanks for sharing 🙂

    Hi Pip!
I am teaching myself to crochet, and attempting this rug, using the pot holder pattern…Do I follow it exactly – i.e. start with 4 chain stitches? Or do you do more than 4 to begin?
    Thank you…..

How great does that look, I'm hooked heading to hooked zpagetti now!!! Love the colour too!

  • Joanna May 27, 2011 at 7:12 AM

I've been working on a rag rug for about a year, adding to it every time I get my hands on some scrap fabric. It's starting to get dirty, though, and I don't know how to clean it. It's about 4 feet across now.

only an hour? i need to learn to crochet.

  • Anonymous May 24, 2011 at 9:39 AM

That looks tip top! I'm going to have a go at that. Great for any ruggy needs. Might do one for our hound!
    Thanks for sharing Pip.
    Hooroo,
    Sandra.

Looks really cute! I made a small oval one out of old jeans once. It was a bear to make, but is so sturdy for the boys' room & had frayed in the best way. 🙂

    Nice

  • Dayna Hutchieson May 23, 2011 at 7:12 PM

Ooh, I need to make one of these.

This looks great. I too am making a rug, except I'm using a much smaller hook and I'm using red twine. It's taking for ever! I looked about for a large supply of thick rop, but it was either too expensive or a very dull colour. I'm so glad you shared Hoooked Zpagetti with us!

    THANKS!

that looks awesomesauce. I always worry about making round things everything goes all wibbly

  • Miss G May 23, 2011 at 3:45 PM

That looks great Pip. I have never made a rug before and with a couple of bad aiming boys I am always buying new ones for the bathrooms….

I think I might have some sheets that need ripping ….. and I have a giant hook for my Tunisian Crochet that would be perfect.

  • Kirsty May 23, 2011 at 2:20 PM

That stuff looks fabulous! I saw it in the window of Can Do…glad to hear it's such a winner.

  • Cath @ chunkychooky May 23, 2011 at 2:01 PM

I have been wanting to do this but I didn't want to do the whole sheet ripping up etc, I am going over to look right now! thanks Pip!

  • captain plaknit May 23, 2011 at 1:34 PM

yay!! i love new crochet ideas and links! thanks for sharing pip! 🙂

  • katiecrackernuts May 23, 2011 at 1:25 PM

You are a clever one. I am knitting dishcloths – because I can't buy the cloth ones anymore and refuse to use something disposable. Now, where do you find your pure cotton yarn? I can only find cottons with a little acrylic and would much prefer cotton.

  • mountainwildlife May 23, 2011 at 12:47 PM

Oooh, I love it! Isn't crochet just the best thing? 🙂

  • alipink May 23, 2011 at 12:22 PM

Brilliant! I've got a pattern for a rug made from sheeting strips. You've inspired me to give it a go Pip.

  • Pip May 23, 2011 at 12:08 PM

    It is a 12mm hook!
You don't get tired wrists if you make sure to let out lots of yarn so there is no resistance…
AND use the pot holder pattern… each round adds an extra treble stitch to the pattern. So you add an extra stitch between the TWO TREBLE clusters. Then just watch your work. If it's curling upwards add a few stitches at even points… and if it's floppy and wavy, take out a few stitches in the next round! Easy PEASY!

  • Frankly Feisty May 23, 2011 at 11:56 AM

I have been looking for a round rug for yonks! I just bought two new colourful stripey rag rugs, but I have a hankering for a round one and just the spot for it. This looks ace and just right. Which pattern do I use? Thanks for sharing. X

  • Jennie May 23, 2011 at 11:53 AM

    I love it!
I've started on some ripped sheet crochet and also a little plastic bag crochet for a Waste/Repurpose Exhibition our local council are doing.

Makes things interesting to use different things as well as reuse!

  • Rie May 23, 2011 at 11:51 AM

The rug looks great! I was going to crochet a rug too – I have a couple of flanny sheets with rips in them that seemed to scream rugs to me! Can just picture bubba Joe rolling around on them in front of the fire!

  • Cindy May 23, 2011 at 11:50 AM

ZOMG – LOVE! What sized hook is it?

  • Little Shop of Handmade May 23, 2011 at 11:49 AM

That rug is ACE – I have rugs plans too this winter after I get off the mitten making fetish that has currently overtaken this winters MUST complete last years queen size blanket. How do you find the super huge crochet hook? is it fatiguing on your wrists? Oh I simply cant wait to make a rug!
