I like Volkswagens. I used to have a really nice Type 3 Wagon. She was blue. ‘Gemini Blue’ actually. We sold her when we found ourselves with three cars and two adults. She was a beautiful automatic, cute and sweet smelling… with lots of sultanas hiding under her back seat.
Autos are quite rare in a VW you know? And lovely to drive. She was a two door. Sometimes she conked out. But of course, crafty gal that I am, I was always able to yank my Emmalunga out of the back, lift the lid and get her started again. We sold her to a lady who was going to use her for her newly established dog walking business. She was not used to dogs, I can tell you, but I’m sure she was happy to have passengers who didn’t wield dried fruit.
Perfect as she seemed, she was missing her ashtrays. Nothing smokey or LuckyStrike-ish about that, though. It’s just that the kids kept filling them up with vegemite sandwiches and fruit fingers and sneakily snapping them shut until the ants started coming on our country drives with us and all was revealed. They were duly removed and later misplaced. Lucky dogs don’t smoke, huh? (Well, only in those very excellent pool-hall artworks.)
She looked like the one above that says ‘half a station wagon etc etc’. Ooh I miss her a lot!
I know that Justine shares my love of Mad Men. In fact I’m sure she loved it first. And as she, and any MadManiac will know, the Volkswagen Lemon campaign made it to the small screen in a particular episode of Mad Men. Volkswagen’s witty and confident campaigns were groundbreaking, beautiful, stylish and caught the attention of the everyone that was lucky enough to turn the page and happen upon one. Isn’t it amazing that VW have stuck with their original look, in terms of advertising? Wise people, those VW execs.
I’m sure you know that a few local crafty gals are VW drivers… but more on that later. Here finishes my ode to the VW. Super-star, super-cute, super-funny and super-great-design. Let’s ignore the fact that they are prone to catching alight. I do think they are the one car that everyone has some kind of nostalgic connection with. I love V-Dubs! Do you drive one? Did you have one? Do you want one? What’s your story? Oh do tell. I REALLY want to know. Big huge time, I do!
xx Pip
