:: Retro Readers: I Capture The Castle

December 15, 2012

Are you on Goodreads? I am, but I haven’t really used it very much. I am silly like that. Goodreads is really good. It’s good to use it!  (My profile is here, but there’s not a lot going on. Silly.)

I like Goodreads because you can make friends with people who like books. Ace.  What could be better than that? Apart from the friending,  you can ‘shelve’ books you might want to read. AND you can get recommendations about books you might not have thought of reading, too. Also,  you can review books, so that other people can glean a bit more about them, which is helpful.

Someone nice on Goodreads sent me a message to say ‘Pip. I think you should read ‘I Capture The Castle‘. I think you’d really like it’. So I downloaded it. I’m very pliable like that. I’m open to suggestion. I would be the one hypnotised and merrily hula-hooping with a chicken on my head. I would be the one nodding in amazement when the fortune-teller says ‘Have you met a brown-haired girl some time in the last year?’ In fact,  if you have a minivan and a cult, back it up to me and glide the door open.  I will follow you to the compound and help the sisters braid each others’ hair with a pleased smile.  I’m RECEPTIVE.

And I was characteristically receptive to this book. I gleefully said ‘Get on my iPad!’ and downloaded it to my Kindle app.  (I don’t have a Kindle.)   The thing is, my iPad was out of charge so I had to start reading it on my phone. Not cool.  It made my eyes go all wincey so I stopped and put my iPad on charge and started writing to you while the little lightning bolt charge thing got its super power on.

And that’s where I am up to right now.

If you would like to read ‘I Capture The Castle’ with me, comment below. Or just email me to say hello and I’m in.  I promise it won’t make your eyes all wincey.

I Capture The Castle is by Dodie Smith (first published in 1948)

My lovely suggester told me there is a movie based on the book too.

If you want to read along, you have until the end of January to finish…. but you might not need that long, I am thinking!  And if you need longer that’s fine, too.

Sign up anytime between now and then.   If you’ve read it, you could always read along again!

Come back to this post if you’d like to chat about the book, too!  (But don’t read the chat if you haven’t read the book, because you might find SPOILERS!)

Are you in?

x Pip
