The great pre-funeral cook off continues. I simply can’t stop and it’s nice to have a positive focus at a sad time, I think. I have been making Blood Orange Sorbet, Candied Blood Orange Peel, Fish Curry (I told you that already, didn’t I?!) and other stuff too. Cam made this last night. Delish. And I made some Romesco Sauce. Not sure why, something to do with some stray peppers that were slapped over a flame yesterday. Remember the crock pot from the other night? I made some very rustic gnocchi and we served the Lamb Ragout over that. Gnocchi is Max‘s fave.
Hope you guys are well and eating good stuff too! Today I’m making cakes for the wake. I don’t like that word much, I have to admit. But it’s cute that it rhymes with cake. It makes it less sad and more Dr Seuss-y. Bake a Cake for a Wake. Not so cheery, actually…! Hmm. Anyhoo, I’m planning an Elizabeth David Chocolate Cake and an Orange Cake and maybe an Upside Down Plum Cake too. Nice.
Rin has been helping out, working in the shop, keeping things ticking over for us. So nice to have grown up kids at times like this. They totally surpise you and come to your rescue, instead of the other way around. These are the things we find out at tough times, hey? Rin’s even reading one of our Book Club books – so I bought a copy yesterday too (I was running a bit behind, but I did read ONE book already, Jonathan Safran Foer’s). We are going to have our own mini-book group and discuss ‘My Sister’s Keeper’. How cute is that?
And to ramble back to the first paragraph, the Blood Orange Sorbet was so delicious. And so simple to make. I dug out our ice-cream maker (I thought I had lost it!) and now we will begin a season of delicious ices and ice-creams. Because we can. I’m also going to make ginger beer for Xmas. It’s definitely time to start the ginger beer starter today if we want fizzy ginger beer for Xmas.
What are you doing? Do tell!
xx Pip
