image from A Print A Day
Jhoanna posted about this a little while ago. And a couple of you have emailed me to tell me about this. And today it’s on Whip Up, so the cat’s way out of the bag, you might say. I’m talking about Spoonflower. A fabulous website which allows you to print your very own design onto your very own fabric! You can order in swatch size, fat quarter size or small yardage runs. Costs are as follows (in US$)
Swatch (8″ x 8″) $5.00
Fat quarter (21″ x 18″) $11.00
1 yard (42″ x 36″) $18.00
2 yards (42″ x 72″) $36.00
3 yards (42″ x 108″) $54.00
4 yards (42″ x 144″) $72.00
5 yards (42″ x 180″) $90.00
International shipping ranges form $7 to $12
If you’re design savvy already, you don’t need me to tell you how to prepare your design – but if you’re not (like me) – pop over here for advice on how to get your image/pattern Spoonflower ready. It includes lots of links to free image editing downloads!
The catch is – at the moment you need to add your name to the waiting list for an invite before you can use Spoonflower. But the good news is that they will be open to all users in a few months time – so add their blog to your Reader if you want to be the first to know! You can also join the Spoonflower Flickr group here.
I’m assuming all this fabric is digitally printed – but after some trawling I couldn’t find any info on the actual printing process – perhaps I am blind?! I would love to know what the quality of digital printing is like – and the pros and cons of digital vs printing by hand. Anyone know?
Of course, I would strongly recommend that while you are having mucho fun making your own fabric – that you offer mucho respect (and custom) to the following extra hard-working, talented, wonderful Australian Fabric Mafia. All printing their own designs, by hand, in your very own neighbourhood. Remember to support the girls that have inspired you to actually WANT to design your own fabric. Because they are good and it’s really imporant to buy local when you can.
and AnnaLaura of late too
Is there anyone else that we should add to this list of local textile queens?! Leave me a comment and I’ll add to the list.
xx Mikes

I never had this idea that fabric printing can be a bit more complicated than kind of printing. I used to think it is the same but it is always great to learn something new. 🙂
Hi! I was looking at spoon flower this week also, some awesome fabrics on there! The only thing to note is those prices are US, So it is more like $25 for a yard in Australian dollars, plus postage. A little bit steeper. Yikes!
