Hello

A Week of Vintage Australiana – With Gemma Jones – Day Two!

April 28, 2008

Tarax is your Friend!

In WA we have “delis” and to me a “milkbar” was very “Clockwork Orange” and not innocent at all!

But the classic family run milkbar is disappearing. Lino floors, 1 cent lollies that you pick yourself, softdrinks in glass bottles, a Fourntwenty pie warmer, old tardy cigarette ads. Melbourne misses them.

My friend Miikel got me into obsessive milkbar spotting. He has an amazing collection of oldtimey Tarax bottles, cigarette packets, icecream wrappers and the like which he swiped from underneath schools when he was skinny enough to shimmy under verandahs after school hours.

Anyway, as a tribute I tried my hand over at “bighugelabs” (do you think a GUY named that company – ha?!) and I thew a non-Oz snap in just to test you out! But, so, when I made it, one of the images dropped out – there’s a freaking GAP! Argh! But then I sort of thought of it as a little sad space for all the milkbars that have died and given way to 7-11s. RIP.
