Do you get caught up in writing about the same kinds of things in the same kind of way? I’m going to give you a little shake up and invite you to create an expressive writing piece based on a prompt or theme. Often writing to a prompt is a great way to come up with original, fresh work that you might not normally create. It can tap into thoughts, feelings and memories that might need a little prod to excavate, but tell a unique story once they surface.

You can write your piece on your blog, or just in a Word document (or similar) for yourself. You could even do this as a weekly (or daily) writing practice to get that writing muscle working more fluidly and improve your overall writing skills.

Here’s twenty prompts for you to consider. Choose one and write something personal and true to you. Try to recount as many little details as you can: feelings, sounds, sights, smells. Take your time and really put yourself in the zone, immersing yourself in the topic at hand.

Take something that currently exists only in your own head and find a way to share it accurately and meaningfully with your reader.

Which famous identities would you invite to dinner and why?
Recount a childhood holiday
A creative hero
If things had turned out differently I would have…
The best thing I ever read
Things I will never do again
The person who changed my life
The silver lining
It was not as it seemed…
My turning point
Alphabetical advice (an A to Z!)
Tourist in my own town
Letter to my 14 year old self
Getting to know me
Noticing…
I’ve changed my mind about…
Outside, over there
In ten years I’ll be…
The ideal day
My legacy

Which prompt will you choose?
