:: Win :: Marion Grasby! Rad!

August 4, 2011

Well. You can’t really win Marion.  Probably her mum would not be keen on that. You can, however, win her new book!  Wowzers!  Just LOOK at this book.  I saw it down the road at one of my favourite bookshops, Brunswick Street Bookstore and knew that you guys would love it. Because I love it!  Luckily the ace ladies who published this book with Marion are friends of mine, because that made it super easy to ask for a copy of Marion-in-book-form to pass on to one of YOU!  (They also sent me a copy to keep, which I thought very thoughtful, don’t you think?!  Thank you Mary! Thank you Ellie!  Hello Jane!)

I like this book a lot, because it’s got all KINDS of recipes, it’s not being a genre-slave.  This book is nice because it understands that we all want to eat different things, on different days, with different people.  You will find an ode to the Toasted Cheese Sandwich sidling up to a menu for a Thai style dinner party. You will find Saturday Afternoon Chicken Stock sitting alongside Sticky Rice.  Spring Rolls snuggle up with Smoked Lamb Cutlets.  There are super crunchy fresh things for those Springy virtuous days, and there are super comforting Wintery dishes for cosy nights.   There are things for the Seasons in between, plus lots of vegetarian options and tarty, syrupy desserty things too.

Marion is chock full of lovely photos, some taken locally and some taken on various jaunts to delicious places like Darwin, Hong Kong and Thailand.  I really love the deep saturated colours in this book.  And I love the neon pinkness of the titles (by the very clever Trisha Garner).  There are also some illustrated recipes, artfully sprinkled by the clever hand of Jane Reiseger (including an adorable gingerbread house!)

Marion is by the super gorgeous ex-Masterchef ray of sunshine Marion Grasby
It’s published by Plum (Pan Macmillan)
Photography is by Ms Sharyn Cairns
Illustrations are by Jane Reiseger
Book Design is by Trisha G

Would you like to win a signed copy of this book?
Just leave a comment below and tell me what you love to eat… tell me what’s delicious to YOU! Make sure you enter before midnight on Sunday to be in the running to win!  I will choose the winner randomly, because I KNOW you are all going to write great stuff in your entry! (Australian Entrants only, if you please..! xx)

xx Pip

  • parasauralophus August 7, 2011 at 6:06 AM

You know – each day is different. But TODAY I am compulsively eating my good friend Barbra's lovingly baked fruit bread with FRESH churned butter (almost straight from the cow! thanks cow and the Cundletown Historical Society! they GIVE their butter away!) – I'm cutting the bread super super thick and laying on the butter big time….. nom nom

  • Jackie August 6, 2011 at 12:01 PM

The simple (and cheeky) answer is I love to eat anything delicious! Even better if it's seasonal, organic and local.

My current obsession is jerusalem artichokes – they're a bit hard to get up here in QLD – made into soup with lots of butter and a dash of cream and topped with some pan-fried mushrooms. ZOMG.

  • Karen August 6, 2011 at 11:44 AM

What a fab looking book! We are loving greek salad at the moment. I have also had many requests for my fried rice and soup. And we made the yummiest home-made hamburgers a couple of weeks ago.

  • rebecca robinson August 6, 2011 at 10:15 AM

i am in constant need of inspiring homey meals to cook for all the growing little ones in my home. trying not to resort to 'kiddy' meals that are totally boring to prepare. please pick me, i would love a copy to get grubby little paws on as they help me cook – i get a little anxious of all the library ones i return a little, ahem, loved…;o)

  • Annabel August 6, 2011 at 9:31 AM

I LOVE my mum's baked gnocchi! So good after a long cold day!

  • MTB Girl August 6, 2011 at 8:54 AM

I love macaroons. The pink colour of this book makes me think of some of them I made for The Biggest Morning Tea. I love the crunchy outside, delicate inside and the delicious ganache in the middle. I'll have to whip up some soon, my husband's been dropping hints that the bought ones aren't as good as mine πŸ™‚

  • Juntei August 6, 2011 at 7:52 AM

I love Mexican food the most! I'm from California and the lack of Mexican food in Australia makes me pretty sad. But my mother has passed down her enchilada sauce recipe and I have found places to get the proper chilies, so I often make enchiladas for me and my husband. I can eat them non-stop. πŸ˜€

I adored Marion on Masterchef. Thanks SO much for the opportunity to win!! <3

  • Katho August 6, 2011 at 7:13 AM

    Hello!
I AM SO EXCITED BY THIS LITTLE COMPETITION THAT IT REQUIRES A SENTENCE WRITTEN ENTIRELY IN CAPITALS! (I have a mini cook book obsession!)

One of the most delicious things ever I think is a Tom Yum Soup (AKA: a party in my mouth)…oh yeah mmmmm….so warmy fresh bold flavour explosion of joy in a bowl! and pretty healthy too

  • kimberley August 6, 2011 at 4:08 AM

    Hi Pip!

My dish of wonderment, especially in the winter months, is my mums smoked fish pie. Its defo not fancy, doesn't have a huge variety of ingredients and is filled to the brim with cheese. But it reminds me of being home with the family and after having moved from a small country town in NZ to big old Melbourne its just what i need to tame my homesickness for NZ and feel at home here at the same time!

    Kimberley

  • monnie August 6, 2011 at 3:28 AM

The most delicious thing to me…is the most perfectly cooked poached egg. Oozy, runny freshness trickling down thick white bread…with some salt flakes and cracked pepper. Mmmmm…

  • call me Rondy... August 6, 2011 at 1:55 AM

We make them at home at least once a month and experiment with different fillings…vego ones with beans, lots of guacamole and crunchy lettuce are my most favourite πŸ™‚ We recently bought a copy of 'My Abuela's Table' which is a lovely Mexican cookbook by Daniella Germain. It's filled with stunning illustrations and we can't wait to start trying the recipes out! Marion's book looks super fantastic too, I'd love to bake that gingerbread house! Yikes! πŸ™‚

  • Tertle August 6, 2011 at 1:22 AM

So Marion is not just smart and talented (and published) but she is blessed with good looks too – figures. someone has to have all the luck. Who would NOT want that stylin book, it is gorgeous. My fave quick and tasty meal is mini Bocconcini wrapped in proscuitto and topped with a fresh fragrant basil leaf. not cooking per se but ….. quick, light and lovely – and probably low fat too.

Wow you ask the tough questions! I am an all rounder. I just got my own place and am loving cooking for my boy and me. This has been the winter of rice pudding. I've eaten more rice pudding in the last three months than in the whole rest of my life. Probably because everyone I know says "eeeewwww" when I mention it. I like it with a couple of dollops of jam mixed in. And some roasted almonds on top. It's the best.

  • Elisa August 5, 2011 at 12:23 AM

    Happy Friday,

Food loves: I could eat Dahl every day and never get sick of it, I could eat my partner's Pasta and be forever satisfied and cupcakes with lots of frosting made with my 5yo mini Masterchef are pretty ace too. But probably my favourite thing ever is toast and avo with a squeeze of lemon and cracked black pepper. Perfection

Hey Pip! I love Chicken Mirabella: this is chicken breasts chopped into bite size pieces, prunes and green olives, I like the marinated ones from the deli. Baked in a baking dish with white wine, olive oil, crushed garlic, and 2 bay leaves. Pip it's amazing, I know hot prunes sounds a bit weird but it goes really well with the chicken and olives. I don't really go by measurements, I just put in as much wine as I'd like πŸ™‚ And I serve it with brown rice. YUM!

  • Yvette August 4, 2011 at 8:16 AM

Things that are delicious to me: most of my mum's recipes – lemon cheesecake that we always make 2 of at a time, spag bog, bread and butter pudding… I used one of Marion's thai kits to make my first ever thai green curry with prawns recently (first go at prawns too) and I'm hooked. My other fave is lemon curd tarts… oh, and toblerone chocolate mousse…and, and…gosh – no wonder I'm in shape (round is a shape) ;p

  • Kate August 4, 2011 at 8:16 AM

That does look like a GREAT cookbook.

  • Maggie August 4, 2011 at 8:14 AM

  • Morgan-Rose August 4, 2011 at 8:14 AM

    Morgan-Rose;)

I love hot chips and potato cakes with vinegar. Yum. Oh and salt. How bad is that?

  • littlechrissy August 4, 2011 at 7:48 AM

Oh wow lovely lovely photos – the essential element of any good food porn. Ive been in bed with the flu for a week and have very little smell or taste for any food right now, except for strawberries, scarlet dripping off my chin. A cheese toastie does sound kinda appealing though…

  • Salvation Jane August 4, 2011 at 7:36 AM

81 comments so far…as if you're going to read mine, Pip!!
I just love this book because a)it's pink b)Marion is my favourite masterchef ever , and c)The team who produced it are THE BEST…and also because YOU like it, and I stalk you.

  • Emily August 4, 2011 at 7:27 AM

Marion is as cute as a button and so is her flipping book! Looks scrummy.

My happy food is sticky date pudding warm from the oven. I thought dates were feral when I was young. To think I missed out on years of pud for my folly!

  • Anita August 4, 2011 at 7:26 AM

my most favorite thing in the world is a bloody good old fashioned Pav! Stacked with cream and yummy berries and passionfruit! Sorry it's not heathly or new age but it's the one thing that brings back memories of my childhood when things were a little easier and much less complicated! ROCK ON THE BLOODY GOOD PAV!

  • Michelle August 4, 2011 at 5:53 AM

That book looks so sweet! I really love to eat anything, I really do, as long as it is real food. By that I mean not made in a factory or filled with chemicals or freaky inventions masquerading as food, you know like spreadable blue cheese. That is all.

    xx

  • Lita August 4, 2011 at 5:48 AM

Ooh yes please! I'm a big fan of food in general, with lots of favourites, but at the moment, I'm somewhat obsessed with store bought ravioli lol

  • Ali August 4, 2011 at 4:35 AM

If I was going to be totally indulgent, I do love a good baked cheesecake, with a hint of lime, or occasionally I totally blow out and make one with caramel in the middle and chocolate fudge on top, covered in strawberries and cream.

  • Brave New Fiona August 4, 2011 at 4:31 AM

Like most of your blog readers Pip, I simply love food, eating it, looking at it, talking about it, preparing it and sharing it. My fav is vegetarian by a long shot! This book looks delightful and I am pleased to see the gorgeous Marion on the cover of her own recipe book. Thanks for the chance to win! xx

  • DuckEggBlue August 4, 2011 at 4:30 AM

Do I have to narrow it down to just one? I love making something with next to nothing, you know on those days when you can't be stuffed going to the super. It's always fabulous especially if your pantry is well stocked and you have fresh herbs in the garden.

    This book looks soooo lovely!

I love to eat all the cooking my mum and sister's dream up.

My favourite though is my mum's fruit cake that she makes ever year for Christmas.

She starts making them in November and wraps them in newspaper for safe keeping until Christmas with the whole family.

The fruit cake is so loved, that my sister even had my mum make them as the base for her wedding cake. x

  • Kelsi August 4, 2011 at 3:14 AM

I would have to say I am a cake girl, anything very dark chocolate but light texture, not mud cakes, with rediculous amounts of swiss meringue buttercream, strawberries pureed and added to the buttercream is amazing. I am definatley a kitchen person.

  • Nic August 4, 2011 at 3:01 AM

Right now, my favourite thing to eat is the left over pasta from last night sitting in the fridge waiting for me to eat it at lunch.

  • Melissa August 4, 2011 at 2:47 AM

Oh wow, this book looks fab. I love eating fullstop but right now I'd love some soup dumplings. First had them in Xian then topped up earlier this year in Singapore. Don't know what it is about them, I think maybe I could eat them everyday.

  • Mrs S August 4, 2011 at 2:47 AM

My favourite changes daily at the moment, thanks to my little 'lola' belly that is due in Feb!

Todays lunch craving is Irish Carbonara (well because an Irishman taught me to make it lol).

Brown enough bacon and onion as required for each serving, remove from pan, add some cream reduce a little then add grated red leicester cheese and some garlic powder, return bacon to pan and there you have it… Irish Carbonara sauce (I'm eating it as I type with cheese tortellini!)

  • Hattie Hen August 4, 2011 at 2:44 AM

My Mum's baked dinners. And it scares me to think she won't always be around to make them. And try as I might, I just can't get mine to taste the same as hers. Maybe it's the love she puts into it, maybe it's her retro looking cookware…whatever it is – I love it!
    Sandra.

  • somekindofwonderful August 4, 2011 at 2:43 AM

Apart from coconut cupcakes – yum! my true favourite is my 'gourmet' toastie.
I love a good toasty, (toasted sandwich), it warms the soul! I've upgraded over the year from just cheese, to ham and cheese, to adding pineapple on special occasions, and have finally settled on this lush concoction:
    proscuitto, quince paste and mozzerella.
So tasty, so decadent…and so easy to make!

    I can't wait to see Marion's toasty! πŸ™‚

  • Carolyn McPherson August 4, 2011 at 2:37 AM

I am so thrilled not to be the only person who uses my rag rugs as a backdrop. Mine are usually muddy, or sandy.

Food. You know, at 37, I am a bit far away from my uni days but I have been craving a uni staple from our share house. Potato gems, in a wrap with sour cream, tomato sauce, lettuce and tomato. Geez Louise it's good.

  • Kirsty August 4, 2011 at 2:04 AM

At the moment I can't stop eating homemade chicken noodle soup. I'm making a huge batch of it week and eating it all the time!

I'd love this book. If I'm not lucky enough to win it – it'll be on my birthday wish list.

  • Dolores August 4, 2011 at 1:56 AM

For years we have ho-hummed with average Thai takeaway in our area, having it on only the odd occasion. Recently we discovered a new Thai place that has been opened by a chef from a renowned Sydney Thai restaurant and the difference is unbelievable. Oh, the flavour, oh the texture, oh the heat (boy the heat!). I find myself craving it all the time now.

  • ginevra / occasional glimpses August 4, 2011 at 1:55 AM

Currently, I really love pasta with melted cheese, tinned tuna & 2 boiled eggs to mix in. Sounds a little basic, but anyway…

  • Leah August 4, 2011 at 1:54 AM

I eat it until I'm full and feel bad when I can't squeeze in one more!

I also really enjoy making food and trying out different things. Marion was definetely a huge inspiration for me wile watching Master Chef. πŸ™‚

Thai Satay Chicken. I've always been a fussy eater and ten years ago I never would've thought this would be my favourite but I luuuurrrrve it. I'm getting all drooly just thinking about it.

Other drooly things are Mini Baked Cheesecakes, slow cooked Roast Lamb and veggies, Mars Bar Slice, Choc Self Saucing Pudding. Mmmmmmmm.

And I don't even want this book for me, my little-est kid would love it cuz she adores Marion.

  • Deb August 4, 2011 at 1:36 AM

I love food, really I do, all sorts of food. But every now and again, like an itch that can't be scratched, I get an urge to make fish curry. Hmmm with steamed rice… and there's only one thing for it, but to make one! I know, it's weird.

  • *evhcreative August 4, 2011 at 1:36 AM

How gorgeous is that book!? I'm a sucker for any nice food photography/book design..
And sweet pepper chicken! Must make! Drooling!
I feel like I'm just really starting to understand cooking (sad, 35 and just figuring out the basics!) but I love anything with a good spice kick and the satisfaction of being able to multi-task 3 or 4 dishes at once – that's the best!!!

  • Anna Walker August 4, 2011 at 1:36 AM

My favourite thing(s) to eat are anything my Malaysian mother cares to cook for me…and because of that, I will have to give the book to her…I think she wishes she had a daughter like Marion instead of me who she got lumped with…Oh well, can't win 'em all!

  • e. Xx August 4, 2011 at 1:32 AM

Oh, how I love food! But my favourite thing to eat is my husbands homemade chicken and leek pies — he even cuts out little pastry pictures for the top of each pie, it's so cute!

  • Maryanne August 4, 2011 at 1:32 AM

I would love to win this.

My favourite? Hmmm, you see this is a difficult question, I'm a bit of a player, I like to get around, try a bit of everything, I couldn't possibly limit myself and have a favourite, could I?

  • Krissy August 4, 2011 at 1:28 AM

  • Cath Elizabeth August 4, 2011 at 1:26 AM

  • claire August 4, 2011 at 1:25 AM

I love eating almost EVERYTHING. But my favourite is my boyfriend's homemade ravioli with spinach, pumpkin and fetta inside. He serves it with a rich tomato-y sauce. Nom nom nom x
