Things I’ve Been Watching

May 10, 2015

olive kitteridge

Just a speedy post to talk TV/streaming, in case you are stuck for things to watch.

Here’s some things I’ve been liking…

Olive Kitteridge
I loved watching this mini-series. How can you possibly beat a cast featuring Frances McDormand, Richard Jenkins and Bill Murray? So good. Beautiful scenery, fabulous set design and great performances. A little sad, for sure, but I really loved it. (The Denise and Jerry characters are golden too!)

Temple Grandin
I really, really loved this. I love Clare Danes in Homeland and she’s so great in this too. It’s a true story based on the life of Temple Grandin, a woman with autism who has a special gift with… cows. (There’s more to it, but I don’t want to spoil things if you haven’t seen it!)

The Fall
Gillian Anderson pretty much has to say nothing at all and you completely understand what she’s trying to convey AND remain transfixed as she does it. This is great-yet-tense UK drama. I can’t wait for the next season of this show. *shiver* (Quite murder-y, FYI.)

Lorelai and Rory

Also… Happy Mother’s Day!!!

And… Do you have any good telly tips for us? What have you been liking?

adored Olive Kitteridge – bloody brilliant. Have also been binge watching Mad Men and now feel empty as it is all over, and Nashville which I watched episode after episode and am hanging for series 3. My hubby doesn’t get it – I told him you don’t have the imagination I do, and the feelings I gather for these made up humans because each and every one of them relates to someone in real life, and stories are so damn fine 🙂

Yes, Orphan Black. We have fallen in love with Downton Abbey again at our house, so great it is on Netflix. We are up to season 4 which we have not seen at all.
I just watched a trailer for Olive Kitteridge. Oooooo it looks brilliant.
Thanks Pip. I love your recommendations.

I LOVED Temple Grandin. So good. As soon as we got Netflix I watched all 16 episodes of The Paradise. I knew I would love it the minute it started, and I adored every second. Who doesn’t get sucked in by a love triangle and shopping?! Beautiful to watch.xx

How do people watch these shows? Our local video shop has just closed down so I am a little bit stumped as to what to do. Do most people use Netflix? By the time we get them from the library the DVD’s are scratched and hardly useable! Does one need a top notch internet connection for Netflix? Dont really want to go out and buy a smart TV if the streaming is going to stop and start and drive us all mad!

I cried when our local video shop closed down years ago too, Emma! Unfortunately, we haven’t got a tech-head in the house so we’ve got an AppleTV box (around $100) that connects to our normal TV, and from there I buy the shows through iTunes. More expensive that way, but I can get the shows from Foxtel, Stan, Netflix etc, without having to subscribe to all of them. We used to have trouble with internet usage (and using up all our plan), so we’ve recently upgraded to unlimited downloads with Optus (which has been fantastic, as I know I won’t run out and not be able to send my work at the end of the month!). A lot of internet plans are offering free membership to Netflix etc these days. (Our Optus plan came with a ‘Fetch’ box, which has most of the same channels as Foxtel, has catch-up TV, and can record 2 programs at a time, as well as recording whole series). We can watch movies on our TV either through the Apple TV box, or the Fetch box. Hopes this helps!

Yes, definitely The Fall! Also Happy Valley (which, I think you’ll like if you like The Fall), Outlander, Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, Orange is the New Black, Orphan Black, Vikings (yum yum!), Girls……Too much!!

  • Mtns Mama May 10, 2015 at 8:52 PM

Outlander! And Mad Men, I missed the boat on that one. And Game of Thrones. Yeeeah.

Sounds like great viewing. I loved The Fall, and am keen for the 2nd series too.

LOVE Olive Kitteridge! Completely trust your judgement on these matters so going to have to check out the others, too!

  • Kate May 10, 2015 at 6:55 PM

We’ve just started Orphan Black and I’m seriously doubting that I’ll be able to keep the – no watching during the week – rule this week. I’m hooked! Also Happy Mother’s Day!!! Hope it’s been loverly. xxxx
