The Lorelai’s First Day At Chilton
After you watch: Things I noted/liked
Lorelai and Rory are still so grumpy with each other. I like it better when they are NICE to each other! (Once Rory finishes her first day at Chilton things warm up. Phew).
Lane doesn’t wave to Lorelai and Rory when they drive past Stars Hollow High. I think she WOULD have.
Paris makes her first appearance. Yay! (As do Madeleine and Louise).
We hear Rory talk about her Christiane Amanpour aspirations for the first time.
The REAL Luke’s Diner makes its first appearance.
Drella the harpist. I’m not sure what happens to her later on, but it seems like they wanted her to be a regular character in this ep.
Lorelai vs Michel is off and running
Sookie vs Jackson is off and running too!
Luke and Lorelai have a cute exchange in Luke’s.
Kirk makes his first appearance, but he’s not called Kirk! He’s called Nick and he’s the DSL guy.
No Friday night dinner in this ep, because they haven’t yet started.

Paul Frank pyjama top! How retro. In a former incarnation I sold about a zillion of these!
Cut-off shorts WITH side splits = laundry day. Team with cowboy boots to complete the look. Red metallic hair bobble! Add a coat if you’re shy!
Flirty short-skirted business suit
Jeans, orange t-shirt and super boring coat. Geez, Lorelai.
Rory
Chilton uniform, saddle shoes (they’re so cute, right?) and BabyG watch
Jeans and a really boring zip-thru. Oh Rory.
Lane
‘Foxy’ zip-thru jacket (which she takes off and gives to Rory for safe-keeping). She’s also possibly wearing cords.

I just read that the lady that played Drella also played Miss Celine! Ha, interesting.
I loved the Michel line you mentioned: “There’s a phone call for you, and if I’m to fetch you like a dog, I’d like a cookie and a raise.”
Did you also notice that in the pilot episode there is a step up into the kitchen in the house that isn’t there after?
Nothing like following this Gilmore-A-Long and getting in to the Gilmore Guys podcast as well – another Drella Factoid that i just learned from those guys – Alex Borstein is married to Jackson in Real Life – so if she had kept playing Sookie that would have been completely weird!
I love that it happens but I find the fact that absolutely ALL of Lorelai’s work clothes were dirty – there had to be something better than the daisy dukes and the tie dye top – it’s just a teensy bit OTT for me.
The Chilton uniform is the best thing that happens to Rori in these early seasons because who ever was doing her wardrobe was pretty evil – she generally gets pretty bad outfits outside of the school uniform for a really long time.
Oh My Gosh! I’m so excited to be joining in with #gilmorealong 🙂 I’ve just finished watching all the eps from beginning to end for the first time and I’m loving going back for round 2 along with everyone here! It’s possibly cool or a little sad but I’ve started making notes this time, partly to prepare for #gimorealong and partly just to get it all organised in my head (I’m a bit mental that way!)
I read somewhere that Alex Borstein, who plays Drella the harpist was actually cast to play Sookie and they filmed the original pilot episode with her in the role. The MADtv execs wouldn’t let her out of her contract though so the role was re-cast and filmed again with Melissa McCarthy. Alex Borstein also plays Miss Celine in later episodes 🙂
My fave line in this episode is definitely Michel’s line about the cookie and a raise!

Yeah, if you watch some of the behind the scenes stuff that is extra on the DVDs they say that they cast her but then had to re-cast when she couldn’t get out of her contract. They even have footage of her playing the role of Sookie and she’s so different. Melissa Mcarthy is so much better.
That footage is so weird! Where she says “my bangs, I burned them”, she does it so differently.
Personally I can’t stand Drella and the actress who played her would not of fitted with the show if she had of been Sookie. I love love Lorelai’s work outfit in this Ep. The one she meant to wear to the first day of Chilton but didn’t when laundry day struck. If only you could actually get away with a skirt that short at work
Oh I agree re Drella. I can’t stand her either. Did you also mean that Drella was originally meant to play the Sookie role? (I did not know that, if so!)
Kirk! I love Kirk’s growth as a character, but it is so jarring to see him in these early eps not being Kirk!
Also I’m intrigued and enticed by any foodstuff with the word ‘puff’ in it.
