Hello

Ann Wood….

October 17, 2007

I thought that you guys might want to read about this.

I’m not even sure whether to talk about this issue anymore… It’s been gone over and over.. but when I read this stuff, it makes me sad that lovely crafters are suffering.

I don’t know the circumstances behind this incident.. and I don’t want to make a judgement about it without knowing the facts.

But after lots of chats with lots of people over the last few months.. about lots of different incidents… I do know that it’s causing sadness and crossness out there…. and it might be time to all stand up and show how we feel about this together – and make our own little personal pledges for all to see.

Perhaps someone might like to design a little badge for us to all put on our blog.. so we can at least fly our own little flag for the ‘Copycats are Dirty Rats’ Team.

xx mikes

I will definitely wear a ‘AnitCopyCat’ badge on my blog! How about ‘Don’t be a Copy Cat and wear your own Creative Hat!’.

Outright copying is bad bad bad. And I wanna know who is “copying” the birds, especially as they’re in Australia…want to check them out!

On the other hand, I’m starting to think I might have to shut myself away from reading blogs and looking at Flickr…’cause I must admit, I’m getting worried. I’d hate to make something that I think is fab, but that someone can look at and think it’s similar to their idea. ARgh!

Last week I finally bought a copy of the ‘Softies’ book. I scoured through it, but can’t find any mention as to whether or not you can sell stuff made from those patterns. ?? anyone know?

    *bangs head on desk*

OK.. we’re onto into it! I think a blog ring would be great, Nikkishell. I think it’s awesome that we can at least try to show our support for each other… even if we can’t always control the commercial copying. I have noticed more and more that ‘craft’ is creeping into ‘mass produced’ items.. and would hope that those who mass produce might use the craft blogs for inspiration – not just COPY the work of others. I would also point out that lots of crafters would probably LOVE to work with corporate clients on bigger commercial projects – they only need to ask. We all have bills to pay!

I’d be more than happy to display a button on my blog for this cause. It’s sad to see this happen and i know some people are unaware of copyright rules but these people Ann mentions obviously know what they’re doing and hoped to get away with it…how silly of them!
Maybe we could start a blog ring to link all of those that support the cause?

So so awful! But it really does show what an amazing tool the internet is in the craft world, We can all band together and make a stand and try to do something about it. Count me in!

  • Hollabee October 18, 2007 at 12:02 AM

I can’t believe it…they’re even trying to talk their way out of it…if they were true artists and it would be a coincedence…they’d take it off the market straight away…instead they’re fighting it as if it were theirs. #@$@*^#@$# We definitely need to fight this! I’m with you Pip, I’d even hang a banner out the front of my house 😉

    qyjThis is outrageous.

  • joyflea October 17, 2007 at 11:49 PM

Yes, something needs to be done. Offenders should be named and shamed. There will always be unscrupulous people with no moral conscience in search of the dollar regardless of who they trample on!! (*Big breath out*)

  • sosser October 17, 2007 at 11:38 PM

    i’m with you, pip.

  • posiepatchwork October 17, 2007 at 11:38 PM

Totally sucks, people are boring copy cats & obviously take no pride or satisfaction in being original or genuinely creative or unique. Love Posie

  • Kirsty October 17, 2007 at 11:19 PM

    Oh dear!

  • Suzie October 17, 2007 at 11:16 PM

I have been reading a LOT about this lately (in illustration – do you read Fifi? – as well as craft). Sometimes it seems like an innocent coincidence, but a lot of the time it’s clearly not.

  • Meet Me at Mikes October 17, 2007 at 10:51 PM

That’s ace, Lara! If anyone has ideas about what the badge might say, or a mini-manifesto, post them here and we’ll get to work on our ‘AntiCopyCat’ Blog Badge. xx

  • angelique October 17, 2007 at 10:49 PM

Isn’t what we see other artists create is to give inspiration not the desire to copy!

  • Stacey October 17, 2007 at 10:35 PM

This is such a sad state of affairs, and seemingly increasingly common.
I see this all the time on Etsy, sometimes the imposter is shown on the same page as the originator (to my opinion) of a design.
I suppose what brings us closer, i.e. the internet, also works against us in some cases.

  • kwoozy October 17, 2007 at 3:00 PM

    sigh!

  • Lara October 17, 2007 at 1:20 PM

Oh sad indeed. I’ll try and squeeze in a badge design!
