Last night we went to ‘Summer Fun In The City‘ at the Fitzroy Gardens with Emma and Leo and Dave and Andre and Lulu! Pablo Discobar played and it was a lovely, cool evening of snacks on blankets after a hot day. If you live in Melbourne, then this is a great thing to go to on a nice night. Pack a picnic and a blanket and meet some friends there. It’s free and starts nice and early so you can be tucked up at home by 9.30 if you are a bit of a Nanna.

It’s perfect for kids because there is a playground up the back OR they can dance and jump about down the front on the grass. So if you kids are dance-y sit near the front. And if your kids are slide-y then sit WAY up the back. There were lots of NOISY BABIES there and it was fine! Not a bother at all because the music is nice and loud! Take your babies! The cafe is right next to the lawn – and there is also a coffee cart and sausage sizzle. There is a big truck full of toilets that I did not fancy visiting, but you probably want to know that if you are going. And no, this is not an advertorial! I just think that you Melbourne peeps would LOVE this! It’s kind of like Moonlight Cinema only free and more fun and with heaps more room. And you can talk the whole time, if you want! It’s a really fun way to take in some music with your kids, and that’s not an easy thing to do in this age of licensed venues and scant all-ages gigs. There were lots of nannas and groups of younger peeps and families too. You simply MUST go!

The most hysterical thing about the whole night was a fella of about 50 who stood front and centre leaning on the stage for most of the evening. He was wearing short shorts, knee-hi socks and sandals with a wife-beater. His mullet was a silvery grey and he had his back-pack firmly strapped on. He kept turning to the crowd and making that ‘rock-on’ kinda gesture with his fingers. Despite the fact that the band is a bit of a funk/soul ensemble. You know, that kind of heavy metal salute? What IS that called?! Anyhoo, he kept doing that. Except for when he was pointing out a few technique corrections to the guitarist. Totally a whole side-show, he was. Just awesome.

We had chips and cheese and ginger beer and then icy-poles on the way home. At home we had big bowls of spaghetti and meatballs for supper. Loving the supper at our house lately. Buck the dinner routine, I say. Sleep in and have a big breakfast, a late lunch – then GO OUT (take some snacks!) -then go home and have SUPPER!

Later, Ari had a bath to wash his park-filled feet. Max went to bed. Cam watched telly in the living room and I crawled into bed and watched Durrell’s Ark until I dozed off.

Hope you had a nice evening at yours. Hope you’re finding time to get out and do nice stuff.

xx Pip

PS :: If you meet friends at Summer In The City for a picnic, then it’s good to each bring a dish and share! Those picnics looked the most bountiful and fun! Just saying..!

PPS :: Don’t forget to take a bottle opener if you are taking wine or beer!
