I tagged along on the Boy’s dusk fishing trip last night. It was lovely. I’d spent the day working and running errands and watching stuff on iView out of the corner of my eye, so it was really good to get outside and relax!
I sat on my very favourite colourful blanket, took in the view of the beautiful Bay, made sure Ari didn’t fall in and was in charge of the lemonade rations. As you can see, it was a tough job. I read a bit of my book (My Family and Other Animals) in between the exciting fish-related, kid-catching, rod-fetching bits. I’m up to the part where Theo and Gerry study the trap-door spider nests. Spiders aside, we caught one fish, saw a string ray and lots of little Banjo Sharks. Ari saw heaps of teeny tiny fish and stepped on a flathead.
We stayed until dark and walked back along the breakwater with torches and empty lemonade bottles at around 9.30. We looked at all the glittering yachts and dinky boats moored in the bay and chose one each. Mine was the ‘Pippa’ which was red and my namesake. Ari chose a tiny green dinghy. I think he was channeling Gerry as he also took his magnifying glass and wanted to collect specimens from the ocean.
Apart from boats, there were heaps of blokes dotted along the path who were rather keen to have a chat, so it was quite a long walk back. Long and chatty, you might say. We peeped up at the people drinking icy cold wine at the Yacht Club and reassured each other that our warm lemonade was MUCH nicer. Then we drove home along the beach road with the windows down and the sun-roof open listening to Blondie and PJ Harvey on the radio. Luckily I’d left a bit of a Lamb Navarin on low in the oven, so we had supper waiting. Delicious, no?! We mopped our lamb juices with less chi-chi leftover hot dog rolls as there was not a baguette in sight. Such a nice day.
If you’d like to see what all the ‘My Family and Other Animals’ fuss is about you can watch some of it here. But the book is lovely. You should read the book. Do. Go on. (I finished my other book (Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret) on the way there too. The reading is really going VERY well this year!)
Today we’ve been to the market to get supplies and are just mooching around. I’ve got work to do on the new book, so I’m going to do that too. I’ve got some embroidery happening for said book at the moment. And then writing up a few projects to test again later next week. There will also be some reading. Some movie watching. Lots of drinking of cold water and eating of delicious cheese is on the agenda.
We re-open on Tuesday (not Monday as previously stated due to extreme temperatures forecast – 41 degrees). We’ll be spending the day on Monday getting the store ship-shape for a new year. Our holiday days are numbered!
How are your days going?
xx Pip
