Today’s list is all about jobs. I’ve had quite a few jobs, and the early ones really gave no indication of where I would be now. The things that did give an indication of my ultimate fate, back in the day, were my dreams.
My dreams went like this: Publish a book and be a magazine-y type writer.
This double-decker aim seemed, back then, to be the most natural dream for me to chase. I loved magazines (still do) and I loved books (still do) and I felt sure that making a career which involved these things was my destiny.
I am pretty fortunate that somehow, I ended up being able to do these things. I think I am lucky. I know that talent does come into play, but I believe equally that the opportunities presented to us along the way get us where we are going. These opportunities are not always part of a strategy. They have a life of their own. And, sometimes seemingly random meetings, clues or stabs in the dark lead to the most amazing things. That’s not just about talent. That’s about fate or luck or the chaos theory or something.
Really, I don’t know what it’s about. If I did know my next book would be called ‘The True Secret of Being and Getting Where You’re Going’ and I would be crowing about being on The New York Times Bestseller list. And I’m not doing that. So I do not know. Dang.
