Home. It’s where the heart is, of course, we all know that. It’s a state of mind. It’s a place of comfort. It’s (hopefully) a safe place, chock full of nice memories and formative times. But where is home? I mean for me, home is obviously in Melbourne. I love Melbourne. It’s full of my favourite things and lots of my very favourite people. I know my city very well, and most places I go, I will see someone I know. Which makes me feel at home. Know what I mean? Ah home.
But I wasn’t born here. It’s not my hometown. I was born in Hobart and spent the first 9 years of my life there. So that’s home too… It’s where the shack is. It’s where nearly all the relatives on my side of the family live. It’s where my first steps, first words, first friends, first days, first blackberry pies, first lots of good things happened. Hobart is my home town. It’s Home Number One. Numbered by date, not preference, because it’s hard to choose betwixt your favourites.
I spent my adolescence : from 9 to 14 – the very formative years, in the far North West of Austalia – in Port Hedland. Those were some of my most very special GOLDEN times! Roller skating, drive-ins, swimming pools, boys with cars, chiko rolls, Miss Yvonne, Dolly magazine, Tarino, Yves Rocher. Those very important GOLDEN things. That makes Port Hedland home as well! Home Number 2. Hope you’re keeping count!
And Melbourne, my home right now, where I have lived for 23 years… more than half my life, will be crowned Number 3! Hurrah! 3 is the magic number. Again!
NB :: I did live in Canberra for a little while… but was forced to escape due to extreme restlessness… 🙁
How about you? How many homes do you have, I wonder? Numbered by order or preference? I’d love to know where y’all come from (and go to).
xx Pip
