Hello Listen/Watch/Read

:: Some Music For You…

July 10, 2012

What are you listening to? Something ace? Yes?  Me too!  I’ve been doing lots of trips in the car, so it’s been especially important to have lots of music at my fingertips. Nothing WORSE than listening to crap radio in the car, right?  Ugh.  I am the playlist queen in the travel department.

At home, I have a SONOS wireless speaker system, (because I am actually a bit of a Tech-Head-Nanna and I like a bit of digital with my analogue!)  I can send music from Spotify or Rdio or iTunes to the Sonos speaker and it also updates my library every day, in case I’ve added new music. I know that Gourmet Girlfriend has this system too and she loves it. (Cam bought mine for me, bless!)
I try to buy an album each week, even moreseo after reading this piece about how some of us acquire music.  I want to make a weekly habit of supporting artists.
If you are skint, lots of artists have free or low cost downloads on their sites. So don’t think legal music is a pleasure you can’t afford.  That is just not true.

You know, sometimes you can get free downloads on Bandcamp as well. If you don’t know about Bandcamp, it’s a musician to fan direct site, where you can buy music straight from the people that made it, maximising the income that artist receives. Rad.

So, after telling you about all of that, here are some music recommendations for today (not sure if these will show up on email subscriptions : if not click over to see!)

If you click over here, you can sign up for Clare Bowditch’s new EP!  I think you should totally do that! It’s FREE! OMG!*

How about you? What are you listening to?  Share your musicky tips, why don’t you?

I’ll be back later with some other Good Stuff!

x Pip

*Disclosure : I need to disclose that Clare Bowditch is rad.

** Proper disclosure : All the things discussed in this post are things I really love. No sponsorship involved. Everything paid for and loved by me. No affiliate links etc etc. Just things I like 🙂

I am loving Clare right now! Well, I always did but especially right now because I just caught up on the final 2 eps of Offspring for the season. She was really great but was possibly upstaged by Billy attempting to sing Clare's sing during her Nina-esq meltdown! I hope Clare is back next season!!

Thanks for sharing what else you are listening to. I love hearing what other people love in the way of music. I love finding new favourites. All of the tracks you posted are interesting and I am enjoying them a lot.

I did go through a stage (as I am sure A LOT of people have) of illegaly downloading tunes. I NEVER do anymore because I agree with you that it is important to support the artists we love.

HI Pip! Those Soeurs Boulay are ace! I'm getting it now! I've just made a Morris as well, he's white and purple, so how about that? I recommend Soko, you can listen to a nice song by her here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sDPSSmhUws. Also I am listening to Beth Jeans Houghton, The Shivers, Herman Dune and Dark, Dark, Dark. My band has just put out it's own EP – you can pay what you want for a digital download on bandcamp at: http://woodfordgreen.bandcamp.com/

    Thanks for sharing!

My best music tip is to sign up for Tunes for Change (http://tunesforchange.org/). Here, great artist donate songs to make a compilation album, and then the customer decides how much they can afford to donate. Each album supports a different charity – at present the Sundae Sessions album donates to OzHarvest, and your purchase of the album/donation goes straight to meals for the hungry. The current album has songs by Kate Miller-Heidke, The Cat Empire, Hungry Kids of Hungary and more awesomeness. Albums are only available for a limited time, so get in quick while you can!

PS – I'm a new fan. Loving your work! Nissa

Hi Pip! Loving those songs, cheers! I love Clare Bowditch too and Offspring, oh my, devastated it's the last ep tomorrow! It's so weird, cause at the moment I am obsessed with The Lumineers and I thought to myself, I will blog about that, and then I took a trip to Mike's and there you were blogging about music too! I guess it's not that weird, but maybe kinda? Loving Spotify too. See ya x

The music gods must be at play because I love ALL of these bands. Didn't think that would happen.

Especially digging the first two bands.

    Thanks!

oh thankyou for the music suggestions! I love Spotify and I used to be so jealous of my friends in Canada with their little "Listening to Spotify" updates on FB. Just downloaded the Les Soeurs EP. Thanks again!

    LOVE our Sonos!

I don't like he Spotify concept. The husbie is into it, but how do the artists get paid? x

I always pay for music & try where I can to buy direct from the artist. That article you linked to is so true. Years ago when my brother was in a band, they made no money touring and most of the band members relied on merch sales to eat! Music doses not come for free.

That being said, when an artist has a free download on their website, I jump on that and normally end up buying the album. Thanks for the Clare Bowditch link.

Friday night I went to JB to get two CDs and left with 4 (as always happens when you go to JB). I bought Jack Carty – How to break your own heart, Regina Spector – What we saw from the cheap seats in the back, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros – Here, and The Shins – Port of Morrow. All are fantastic. I love music.
