Pip’s Guide To Happy Days : Episode One
Get a budgie. Better still, get two. Budgies are not only beautiful, they are cheery and chirpy too. Granted they scatter seed and teensy fluffy feathers about the place a bit. But they also kiss each other all day and remind you of those cute collectable cards that used to come in tea packets. Or they might remind you of biscuit tins, because they sometimes came festooned with budgies. Or they could possibly remind you of your Nanna. My Nanna had a budgie for a while there…
We have two budgies. They are called Margot and Heston. We used to have Gerald too, but he was a fragile mite… Let’s not talk about him. Sometimes I call Margot and Heston, Bethenny and Jason instead. They are really good humoured about that. They do not mind a bit. They just twitter merrily and run their beaks through their feathers. I think they would be happy even to be called Fred and Rosemary. They are totally affable. (Not Fred and Rose… the budgies, I mean.)
Budgies are a tiny bit messy, but very beautiful. They need a nice sized cage, fresh water and seed each day, and they need to be kept somewhere warmish. They like to chatter, but mine don’t really sing, per se. If you like chatty pals, then budgies are your peeps.
Happiness is a warm budgie.

I had budgies growing up. They call them parakeets here in the states, but I have an Aussie dad, so budgerigar it was. Funny I always thought it was buderigard with a 'd' at the end.
Ahhh budgie's the quintessential 1970's pet in Australia – had 2 myself and you know sometimes they can talk. Not articulate like a cockatoo ( not that I want to give those hooligans of the bird world any attention) but budgies can manage a "hello" and a "pretty boy". Mine did.
I was glad to reach the end of Miss G's comment – my initial reaction was that the post had just jogged her memory, "oh that's right, I have a cocketiel somewhere around here, now where did I put him" – thankfully no that was not the case.
Aw they do look very cute! I'd be worried about the news though – I've heard they can be very chatty and drown out the radio/tv/whatever you're listening to. Have you had this problem?
I think it is a rule that nana's have to have budgies. mine had them. So that's two nana's and that's a thing
As soon as I started reading, an image of my nana was evoked, haha! Did all nana's own budgies? Was/is it a rule? I don't think I'll wait till then…
Love the first picture with all those Budgies! So colourful.
My Oma had a budgie! Then she got a feather allergy and had to give it away. Now she collects budgie figurines. It breaks my heart.
The first pic is awesome. I forget that budgies are originally wild birds.
cutie buggies I am more a doggy lover but glad you love them my Sophie wants a bird but I just have a phobia to them unfortunately 🙁
Yep, I agree – budgies are totally awesome!! I love hearing mine chirp away together..
It does sound lovely and warm and cosy, but not for me…. I'm ornophobic. I think I'll stick with the cat. Meow.
while i'm not really a fan of keeping birds in cages, reading your super cute stories of budgies could almost sway a gal to the darkside. we had a budgie called mr bojangles and when i was a youngen, about 4 or 5 years old, i let him out of his cage to fly away. mum wasn't happy with me for ages. i can see why now!
Birds in cages make me feel sad. Happiness to me is a warm cat curled up in a nook.
I have 5 budgies that live with my two cockatiels in a patio avairy. One of them is ancient and refuses to go to birdie heaven. She obviously has it too good here. Cheery little creatures.
Such cute budgie tales!
You Can Call Me Al!
Shit Grif!
CUTE!
we have a yellow budgie named Al- we love him and yes he is very messy
jus
I had a budgie, he was awesome. He was called Grif, he called everyone around him Grif. You would walk into the room & he would say "Hi Grif!", he would also swear & make up sentences… for example.. "kiss shit Grif"… He made that up by himself! (from Kiss Me, Shit & Grif!)…. Sometimes he would even make another sentence up …. "Bite Shit"… taken from Bite me & Shit! So… we had to mind our language!
Budgies are delightful and in pairs would be so entertaining. I've had many budgie friends over the years but have decided I don't miss the mess.
I have just been reminded of our cockatiel (sp?) By your post, Pip
He would make happy wolf whistles and telephone ringing chirps. He spent more time flying around the room than in his cage. I think he flew away one day when the door was left open. I think he would have come back but couldn't find the door again.
I think my boys would love a budgie. If I find a good cage at the op shop we will get one. I will even crochet a cover for it.

Ha, you crack me up. But i'm afraid that i will be petless for a while longer. At least until i'm a super responsible grownup. x
