Floss is the fancy-schmancy craft name for embroidery thread, and it comes in a crazy, exciting, inspiring spectrum of gorgeous colours! The DMC brand floss featured above is six strand embroidery floss. What the heck does that mean? Well, it means there are six weeny strands in each mega-strand of floss.
This is so that you can customise your floss to the thickness you need! So you can use all six if you’re a gun-make-it-quick-and-thick kind of stitcher, or you can separate it out into one or two or three or four or five strands, depending on what sort of finish you are trying to achieve. Some things look great stitched thick and fast – and others lend themselves to a more delicate line – so you can use your floss accordingly!

see there are six strands in each mega-strand?!
I think for this project, if you are a beginner, that 3 strands would be best. That’s not too thick and not to spidery thin either! But you decide for yourself – and then you just separate the strands – as Cam is demonstrating below (under mild duress!)
three strands on the left and three more on the right makes SIX!
Be like Cam and separate your strands – we’re halving the floss
and using only three strands!
Good quality floss will separate easily without too much resistance and tangle. Just pull it slowly and gently until it separates. Easy!
Then thread your needle and away we go!

A note on tangles – you should cut your floss so that it measures about the same length as your forearm. My friend Jess told me that, and it certainly reduces tangles. Floss is a tangly kind of medium – so be aware of what’s going on with your stitching at all times – then you can act quick if things get a little knotty somewhere and gently untangle. Going carefully certainly beats undoing your work and staring again!

OKAY! We’re ready to learn to back-stitch now! Stay tuned!
