A Week of Australian Fabric Design – Profile – Kristen Doran

October 17, 2008

You’re designing some lovely fabric and crafty things now, but what were you doing before this crafty life? Corporate Graphic Design and having kiddies.

Do you come from a long line of crafty people? Have you always made things? Yes, both my grandmothers sewed. One sewed ball gowns with sequins for her and her sisters. She also did bark paintings!! The other did piece work to earn money for her family. She was also a legend a crocheting and tried to teach me a few times.

What other jobs have you had? Waitress, retail sales, graphic designer, textile designer.

Is fabric design your crafty dream come true – or did you arrive at it unexpectedly? It’s been a culmination of skills learnt in different jobs over the years. And I’m absolutely loving it.

How much time do you spend on your craft? How do you manage the craft/life balance? Lots and lots of time. Sometimes too much time. I need more sleep.

What do your family and friends think about your crafty life, your blog and your work? I think my Mum is very surprised. She doesn’t have a crafty bone in her body and will be the first to admit it. But she’s always happy to listen to me rabbit on about fabrics etc. My kids are very supportive. I always show them my work in progress and get the right ‘ohhs and ahhs’ sounds. They know who cooks their dinner!

Who inspires you? Crafty or otherwise, and why? Lotta Jansdotter – craft and surface design. Because she’s living the work life I dream of.

What will you be working on in the coming twelve months? Is there something you really want to do – or an area of your work you want to improve or learn more about? I want to work on more yardage prints. More craft panels and try to get more colours into each print (which means spending more bucks!).

What do you find difficult about this crafty life? And what is the best part? Difficult – too many ideas, not enough hands to make it. Best part – the opportunity to make money from doing something I love.

Do you find it difficult to balance the creative with the commercial when you are designing? No, I just design what I love and if it’s something I would buy myself, then I’ll have it printed. If it comes across as a very ‘commercial’ looking design, so be it.

Do you have time to make things for yourself? Not really. I have 3 quilt tops in various stages of completion. I doubt they will be finished this year.
