A new year is a great time to think about what your blog needs to be, to keep you feeling fulfilled. Often, we get caught up in the jumble that is creating content on the hop, getting it down and then getting it up (so to speak!) While I think that sort of spontaneous and on-the-fly posting can be great, sometimes it’s good to slow things down a bit and zone in on why you are blogging and what you are trying to achieve.
With that in mind, I though it would be a great idea to create a mission statement for your blog and get clear on the overall message you are trying to send to your readers.
Grab some blank paper and a cup of tea and a pen and let’s do a little exercise to focus in a bit…
Let’s start with a few basics and talk about where you are now.
a. What does your blog do?
b. How do you achieve that?
c. Who are your readers?
d. What do they gain from reading your blog?
Okay. So that’s a little heads up on where you are right now. Hopefully that got you loosened up a bit and you are thinking of all the good things your blog is doing for you and your readers.
Next, try this – and this can be more aspirational, it doesn’t have to be where you are now, it can be where you want to be instead.
e.What would you most like to do for your readers?
f. How will your blog affect their lives?
g. If you could sum up your blog’s life philosophy in one sentence, what would that be?
Now let’s pull it all together:
What is your blog’s mission? e + f (it can be a couple of sentences!)
What is your blog’s message? g (keep this to one sentence!)
How did you go? Is this helpful?
