Hello

A Week of Vintage Australiana – with Gemma – Day 3

Madame W

Like lots of crafty chickens amongst us – I dig vintage patterns. But most of all I like Weigel’s Patterns.

Weigel’s always have the most charming and original illustrations – and because I come across them more rarely, I treasure them all the more. But most of all – they are cool because they are very local pieces of vintage ephemera.

Johanna Weigel was born in the real real olden days – 1847 in Poland – met a cool chap in the USA when she was studying pattern making at the McCall’s Institute. The romance continued and their short planned honeymoon in Melbourne turned into a lifetime. Their early business was set up right near the old Richmond Meet Me At Mikes store – just in Lennox Street!

All I plead is – if you find a Weigels pattern – and its just one of many in your collection – maybe you will post it my way?!

Read a ****mysterious**** tale stemming from the Weigel gravesite here.
