If you read this blog regularly, you’ll know that Cam’s sister (Pip! Yes, another Pip!) is getting married. Here is part of her wedding gift. I made it yesterday. I’m really happy with the way it turned out! I think it goes a tiny smidge towards capturing a bit of the Sendak sketchiness and the Max cheekiness. At least a tiny smidge…

It took quite a few hours to do. I traced the image straight from the ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ book onto a piece of calico with a fading marker. Then I stitched my little heart out, using mostly 1 strand of the 6 strands of thread.

(A Brief Beginner’s How To :

  • You need fabric, an air fading marker, a storybook image or scan, floss, a needle, a hoop and some scissors – see notes within text below:
  • You need to buy the regular DMC embroidery ‘floss‘ (stranded cotton) and you pull it apart until you have one teeny tiny strand. That’s how you get lots of fine sketchy details.
  • Trace your scanned image or storybook character with a fading marker. The marker fades away in a day or two and you are left with only your embroidery.
  • Use an embroidery hoop to stretch your calico out nicely. The hoop makes it easier to stitch your design. Re the fabric, you can use linen or another open weave plain fabric as well – but calico (or muslin in the US) is easier to source here.
  • Stitch away – I used back stitch and stem stitch on mine!)

I framed this piece in an Ikea frame. You could get fancy if you want and get it professionally framed. It would look nicer, probably. Or you could leave it in the embroidery hoop – with a ribbon tied to the screwy bit at the top – and trim it all up nicely. That would be cute too.

I’m going to make a new Sendak piece for them each anniversary, so they end up with a series of lovely storybook embroideries! How cute will that be?! Luckily they don’t read the blog, so no cat’s out of the bag here! Phew.

Did you know that OUR Max was named for after this Max?! Did you know that Rin (my eldest who is 21) has a Where The Wild Things Are tattoo?! Did you know that we are BUSTING to see this movie?! Did you know that? I bet you didn’t!

Heaps of other exciting things happening in the Land of Mike’s. I’ll tell you more tomorrow!

xx Pip
