Hello!

It’s quite early in the day in Ubud and I’m doing a bit of writing before activities for the day start. We’re all having the loveliest time! There is something about the pace of Bali that makes everything so much more calm and dozy. I am liking the contrast to Melbourne life and super glad of the gear shift, to be honest.

I can’t tell you too much about what we’ve been up to, because what happens on retreat stays on retreat, but I can tell you these things:

1. The food is so, so good!
2. It’s ace hanging out with so many nice people and doing handmade things.
3. I have the hugest room and bathroom all to myself! Jeepers!
4. I am sleeping really well here because it’s not noisy like at home.
5. I am really good at bartering. Who knew?
6. I love Bali Kopi.
7. The people on retreat are really lovely and huggable.
8. I’m taking someone out for lunch today!
9. I spilt a whole (glass) jar of kimchi all over the floor yesterday. Gasp! *holds nose*
10. Hibiscus flavoured drinks and (proper) coconut water are my faves.

I’ve been reading lots of my great-grandfather’s stuff while I’ve been here, too. It’s really nice to get a bit of familial grounding each day when I’m so far from home. Here’s a delightful little morsel from Frank:

Find time for yourself. Feel it no shame at proper periods to be doing nothing. Make seasons for leisure and for recreation. Climb the hills; scour the valleys; row on the river; stroll along the beach. Cultivate the friendship of the fields and the ferns and the flowers. Laugh with the young folk and romp with little children. Be at your ease. Let the mind swing into an easy balance, a natural poise, an attitude of perfect repose. The restless soul, eternally doing
something, never accomplishes anything. It is the person who can sometimes be at rest who produces the finest work in the long run. Find time for yourself!

Love to you!

x pip

Your great-grandfather was wise. SO wise! It is so awesome that you’ve found his words and wisdom Pip.
Bali sounds dreamy, reviving and lovely. How beautiful it is to read about, to “watch” you growing into new things and even maybe a new season of Being Pip.
Mwah. Good on you lovely lady.

Glad you’re having a swell time! It is ten degrees in Hobart today and I am cold. Eat one of those mangosteens for me!

What beautiful, wise words from your great-grandfather. Reminds me a little of Henry David Thoreau. Oh how I wish I could escape for a little bit. It looks so beautiful over there. Enjoy. xx

A post that has me longing for a little of that ‘time for myself’. Your grandad’s writing is awesome. Where do we find more? Is it published, or will be published? How special to have it and be connected to such beautiful thoughts and ideas.

He was a Baptist pastor – search for FW Boreham to find more. He published 55 books, wrote thousands of editorials for The Mercury and also The Age AND sold millions of books! x
