Tales From A Tricky, Cosy, Quiet Place

May 24, 2018
Vida by Starz

Hallo! I’ve been doing a lot of work and not popping in here as much as I want to, so thanks for being so understanding of my busy-bee-ness!

When I have not been working, I have mostly been doing quiet things and hanging out with my kids.  Sometimes life takes a long time to sort the tough bits out, right? That’s how it is now, but I am making the best of things and finding gems amongst the craggy, pointy bits.

I wanted to tell you about a couple of things I have been watching (I have been making things too, as you can see on Instagram!)

Thing one I have been watching:

Vida (Stan)

A series about two sisters who return to their childhood town when their mother dies, and have to come to terms with what’s changed – and what hasn’t. I’m really enjoying it. I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to spoil anything for you.

(NB: It has very graphic secksual scenes, ladies. Just a warning if you find that a bit much. Honestly, I do, but I’m easily startled.)

Sweetbitter

Thing two I have been watching:

Sweetbitter (Stan/Starz)

A series about a small-town girl who heads for New York and gets a job in a fancy restaurant full of very complex characters. I am also enjoying this a lot. It’s less secksually in yo face, and a little bit … sort of self conscious and “look at the pretty lost girl in the big city” but I don’t care. I am still having fun watching it – and not everything has to be perfect.

I have some other things to tell you about, but I really want to have a hot bath and do my bedtime yoga and have a cup of tea and make a hot water bottle … and I am sure you wouldn’t want to begrudge me that for the sake of prattling on about tea cosies, now would you?! (How good is bed time?! )

Much love to you. I hope you are well and having some good things happening in your life. And if things are less good, I am sorry to hear it and I send you a little teary fist bump of support.

xx Pip

PS: I also watched this episode of Chef’s Table (netflix) and I loved it so much and can imagine being a monk now.

Oh man, I’m terrible with the secksual bits, I am the only person of my generation to have not watched Sex and the City haha. Too much! Did love that Chef’s Table episode too, so damn calming xo

    Hi Pip,
I too am finding gems amongst craggy bits, and return that fist bump to you with a wink and a nod.
Thanks for the chit chat about “Vida”, I just watched the first two eps and I love it. I agree about those scenes, but it does add to explaining the characters personas. I would never have found this little viewing gem if you hadn’t mentioned it.
I watched it and then I too made tea, hot waterbottle and snuggled between flanelette sheets. I pondered all the crochet blankets I’ve started, and the tea cosy gift I want to make and felt grateful for my cosy bed.
Wishing you the cosiest of bedtimes. X

    Pip,
You have such a beautiful turn of phrase and a compassionate heart. I would love for you to write a book of Pip wisdom, because I think it would mean the world to a lot of people.

There’s a new season of Chefs Table on NZ Netflix and it’s great. The episode about the woman who is the head baker at Milk bar in NYC is great (I love her rainbow sprinkles cake!). I liked that monk episode, so serene – the episode with Ivan and his ramen empire is a hoot, check it out.

I wrote about that episode recently too! It’s great isn’t it?!

I love your way with words. “but I am making the best of things and finding gems amongst the craggy, pointy bits” Yes yes yes that is where I want to be, where I am trying to be. It does take a long time to ‘go through the process’, surprisingly long (I am not sure I really like ‘the process’ people keep telling me I have to go through.) Sorry you’re going through a beyond crappy time 🙁 Fist bump to more glorious gem discovering in the future! Will check out Vida and Sweetbitter…am up-to-date with Younger and Imposters so after something different! Wish I could crochet, your stuff is so pretty. I did start some macrame this week (well kindof, tried a few old knots and dusted off the cobwebs and found my T-pins)

Thank you for the link to the chef’s table. That was a very thought provoking and moving episode. Blissful mind, that is my take away, to practise having a blissful mind.

Big love to you Pip. And thank you for the teary fist bump, I’ll send one back to you because things are a bit wobbly here too. Life is hard sometimes isn’t it & even though there is some good in every day & not every day is fraught, it’s pretty crappy when you have a constant niggle of horrible-ness in your heart & you aren’t able to fix it.
I need a show to watch but I always get overwhelmed with the choice on Netflix & just turn it off. But I did watch the Christina Tossi Chefs Table & liked that a lot!

Lovely to hear from you pip, I think of you often.
Fist bump back, things arent really tough here, but when people I care about are hurting I feel it too. I’m sorry to hear you are still having a tough time. Thank goodness for beautiful children. Your pre bed ritual sounds like the most wonderful act of self care and love. I hope you slept well.
    Cheers Kate
