Today I went into the city and had lunch with Rin. We went to Grand BBQ again.  Before I met her I bought Ari a copy of The Roots ‘How I Got Over’ and nipped into Magnation and bought the latest Anthology Magazine. I really like that magazine. I am so happy, actually, that there are so many magazines that are NON-stupid and made for people like us. In the old days magazines were more stupid and for shiny, toothy, sparkly people. NOW there are magazines for people like us. We are more the plaid, birch, floral, velvet, gingham, pastel, neon type of people. But I digress.

As I paid for my Anthology Magazine, the girl in the shop opposite us started singing The Cranberries’ ‘Zombie’ at the top of her voice. That was weird/loud. The man in the magazine shop nodded when I said ‘the 90s will never die’ and I took my magazine and went off to meet Rin. We ate a delicious lunch and talked about school teachers and inheritances and phone battery life and how good things to eat often look a bit gross…

Then we went to Myer and had cappuccinos and carrot cake at the cafe there. We like non-hipster things too, see? I like the Myer cafe, for instance. It’s very Snow White. Tiny birds come down and try to eat your cake while music is playing merrily. It’s really sweet/unhygienic. They’ve hung paper cranes and evil eyes to ward the birds off. Signs on the tables read ‘do not feed the birds’. Obviously the birds can not read and they were actually feeding themselves. I thought they were quite cannily resourceful and have found a clever loophole, really. It was hard to be cross with the birds although the lady next to us was. She kept shooing them away from our cake crumbs, waving her hand across our table like she was swotting flies. I found her more annoying than the birds, to be honest. I wanted to give her the evil eye.

After Myer, we went to Muji. Have you been there? It’s really SUCH a cute store. I didn’t buy anything because I am really trying not to buy too many things and A Year Of Ethical Fashion has me fine tuned about this stuff. Rin got some skincare products which seemed nice…

Next I got the tram home and THAT is when I read the Anthology Magazine and THAT is where I found out about the great blog This Is 50. Anthology have done a really cool profile on blogger Kristin Perers. Kristin blogs at This Is 50 but she’s also a photographer, stylist and all ’round creative genius!

SO often everything we see online and in magazines is about super cute 20 somethings… I love this blog (and did you catch THIS slightly related home spread) because it’s an ace homage to creativity and style at any age, really, but specifically at 50 plus!  Get yourself over there, quick smart!  I don’t want to tell you too much about Kristin, because you really should check out the piece in Anthology. There’s a preview of Issue 15 here. Go see.

Gosh. That was a long convoluted story really, wasn’t it? The conclusion is that you should a) do fun stuff with people you love, especially if it includes cake crumbs b) add This Is 50 to your reading list and c) know that most birds can’t read.

x Pip
