Creativity Hello Rad People

:: PK, Creative Epiphanies & Fluketographers: The Photo School

July 1, 2014

Sunday was the gloomiest of days. I can’t even begin to tell you. It was drippy and freezing and the perfect day to stay inside. So I went out. I know, I know. I COULD have been eating baked bean jaffles and sipping tea in front of the heater. Instead I chose to do a much better thing and headed to Kate Berry & Peta Mazey’s brand new, first ever The Photo School workshop. Sheesh. Jaffles are good and all, but it’s a fairly rare jaffle that serves you creative epiphanies on a Sunday afternoon (well…)  The Photo School did that better than any jaffle and in fine company too.

P & K (or as I silently call them, PK) welcomed us into a cute balloon and confetti adorned room, and spent the morning giving us a whole bunch of great, practical tips on better iPhone photography. THEN we had a really blinking yum lunch made by Kate & Jade. In the afternoon we moved onto DSLRs and found out more about why we should be shooting with the manual settings on our camera. We also found out more about Photoshop and Lightroom. HELP-ful!

This was the perfect workshop for someone like me. I like to call myself The Fluketographer. I have a pretty good eye and can cobble together shots I like, but I wanted to dig a bit deeper. The Photo School is an excellent all-round run-down of where I should be starting, how I can improve (practically) and what my next steps should be. Shazam. It’s totally non-scary. No question is too derp-y. And everyone is supportive and kind.

I left with a notebook full of tips and proceeded to twiddle the dials on my camera mercilessly, taking one billion shots and working out what the technical bits and bobs really do/mean. I also downloaded Lightroom and think I might like to apply CLARITY to the whole Universe. Plus I bought Peta and Rachel’s book ‘Beyond Snapshots‘ and am reading it on Kobo RIGHT NOW (which is actually not the best way to read an eBook, but I digress!) I’m like that. I dive right in.

I can’t recommend this workshop enough, if you are a) someone like me who wants to formalise their skills a bit more (with a fun, plain English focus!) or b) want to find out how Kate & Peta achieve their ‘pretty light’ photos (and other excellent effects too!) or c) are a little bit addicted to new skills and want to find some with like-minded souls.

(A few other nice people went along to this workshop: I sat next to/chatted with Stacey from Veggie Mama, Emma Dean from Masterchef, Megan Spencer of ABC Central Victoria and Yvette of Bear Loves Dove. NICE, right?! Hello peeps!!)

So, phew, that’s what I did on Sunday! Got damp and had an ace time!

What did you do? Did you choose the JAFFLE option?! Did you keep your toes cosy?!
