Our Early Morning House

September 2, 2015

Today I woke up at 4.40am. When I got up I found out that my friend Gemma had woken up at 3.30am, so I didn’t feel quite so weird about it. Well. Except for the fact that Gemma has a baby bouncing around inside her to ensure she’s wakeful. I don’t have any such excuse. I’m just going to say that the exhaustion of moving house if finally starting to wear off and I went to bed early and six hours sleep is pretty much what does it for me (at this stage of my life, anyway.)

Today was my first super-early morning at my place. It’s pretty ace, truth be told, because of all kinds of things.

Firstly – our kitchen is not a room outside our house, as it used to be when we lived in Fitzroy. It’s INSIDE the house, like in a PROPER HOUSE. Our old house was an old shop, so it wasn’t really built to be a comfy place to live. Our new house is an actual house. You can get up and make a cup of tea without even going outside or stepping in dog poo in the darkened courtyard.

Today I got up and made tea in the early morning darkness. I didn’t step in dog poo. I didn’t even have to get a torch to navigate the trip to the kitchen for outside tea. I just walked up the hallway and flipped on a light. So fancy. I was so excited that I might have made three cups of inside tea. I also drank them when they were a little bit too hot, just to get that hot-tea-restorative burn in my throat. (My throat is a bit sore today.)

The second good thing about our early morning house is the birds. SO MANY NEW birds. At our old place there were not that many chirpy-type-songful-type birds. There were those mynah birds (is that what they are called?)… and some of those dove type birds that coo and sort of gently rumble about the place. But that was it. At our new house there are mysterious birds with all kinds of ace tunes. I am still learning about them, so I can’t tell you much more than that. I definitely know that there are wattle birds amongst them, though…

The third good thing about our early morning house is that we have central heating. Our old house? Nope. No heating. Just portable heaters. This new ducted heating thing is a bit amazing. The house heats up an 2 minutes. Instant comfy cosy. I’m totally into it.

The fourth good thing about our early morning house is that we have a really beautiful view over the rooftops and into the distance. The living room is elevated from the street and at the front of the house and it’s about 11 metres wide with HUGE windows. When the sun is rising we have an amazing front row seat. It’s so lovely and sunny. (At our old house we didn’t have a view at all, and we could only see the sun when it was up up up!)

Basically I’m really loving it here. I’m breathing a huge sigh of relief.

I love our inside kitchen. I love our birds. I love our warmth. I love our sunny view.

It’s the little things that make me the happiest, because the little things are the BIG things, right? They truly are.

An inside kitchen, lack of morning dog poo (or any time of day surprise dog poo, to be honest), and local birds all sound delightful! So lovely to hear you’re so happy in your new place 🙂

Oh Pip! I’m so happy for you! I just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the sound of happily chirping birds…I like to watch them hopping around the yard. I LOVE to watch them in their birdbath! Some I’ve been able to identify just by their happy chirping in the bath (which is right outside our front door – which is usually open (screened) while we’re home.
Suggest getting a small birdbath fountain. We found one very reasonable at Amazon (about $30 USD. and the birds are attracted to the sound of running water…it’s just great fun to watch/listen to them.’
I’ve seen 6-7 (or more!) birds on the bath at one time…all chirping and rustling their little wings as they trounce about in their bath/fountain. The hummingbirds are really fun. I turn the fountain on about 6:30 in the morning – and there is a hummer there on the bath in less than 5 minutes! Sometimes he even sits right on the middle where the water is spouting out…other times, he (and other birds as well) sit on the second level (this one is three levels) and they let the water drip on them even as they rustle about in their usual way…
The sounds of happy birds, heat when you need it, an early morning cuppa tea (or coffee for some of us!) is just a slice of heaven you don’t appreciate until you’ve lived without!
Enjoy! Don’t even get so used to it that you take it for granted….
Happy, happy for you….and there will, I bet, be even more inspiration for you in your new home.
    Enjoy!

We went from a little box of a house with no view and nosy neighbors ( we had a grumpy neighbor that banged on the wall when I laughed, can you imagine that?I laugh often) to one with a view on trees, which in LA is not common at all, so I can relate, and I am so happy for you!! There is a big cockroach problem where we were, too, roaches big as mices that would come in through the windows and the door, and the kitchen was just a dark corner in the living room, I hated it. Our new kitchen was built at the same time , and not too far from, the real location where the Gilmore Girls was filmed! It’s like, a sister kitchen of the Gilmore Kitchen. It’s sweet and easy to clean and has a lot of windows. I am very happy you like your new home! I think that you are the kind of person who can make a happy home anywhere…but hey, it’s easier in a pretty house!

Yay Pip! This sounds great. I love that you have such a wonderful new home! Totally with you on the inside rooms and heating. We put ducted heating in and it was a revelation. Still amazed to be in the kitchen, in winter and not freezing. One day soon we will get an indoor toilet. Modern living, huh? Good stuff.

Pip I’ve just moved too and I feel the same love and gratitude for my house that you do for yours. I also have that kind of far away over the house rooves view and lots of sunrise right in my face. It’s so great that I just want to conjure up a way I can work from home now. Hooray for new beginnings! ( and I really wish I only needed 6 hours sleep, I would get so much more done). X

What a lovely atmospheric post. Wattle birds! How I miss their warbly call. I’m making your tangy lemon slice today in my tiny electric oven in China…wish me luck! x

I’m doing an inside kitchen, sunny big windows, 3 cups of tea, central heating happy dance for you right now, Pip! x

That sounds awesome Pip, what a lovely way to start the day.
And just how have you managed to be so cheery and bright without an inside kitchen and dog poo? Make yourself a badge, you’ve earned it.
    cheers Kate

Yay for the little things! Glad you are so happy in your new house 🙂 Our view is good and bad, but it is OK. We put lots of plants on the balcony to hide the steel roof next door :). The parrots are back in the tree around the corner and they are so loud in the evening! Yay for nature!

How wonderful for you Pip! It truly is the little things. And we only get to appreciate them when we live without them for so long-so good on you for persevering for so long with the shop. For me it was appreciating running water (via a tap!) and a non leaky roof after moving to a dry climate after living in the subtropics for five years where it rained just about every day! And birds-one of the most precious things attached to living, I think 🙂 x

I’m so happy for you Pip! I’m in Sydney and lucky enough to back onto the bush, the birdsong here is amazing……..enjoy your new home!

Great to ‘hear’ you sounding so enthusiastic about your new digs, Pip! New starts are mostly wonderful, and I’ve found myself craving one lately – not necessarily a new house, coz I love mine – but, something.
I too was up at 4:30 this morning, but definitely not by choice! I have a 3-year-old alarm clock that needs serious adjusting 😉

That sounds amazing! All I hear are sirens and cars and my view isn’t that great either, just a lot of high buildings everywhere.
